Schools seek grant funds for cafeterias

The Cumberland County School Nutrition Program is seeking several grants to increase food offerings and upgrade cafeteria equipment.

The Cumberland County Board of Education approved three grant applications during its Oct. 22 meeting.

The nutrition program is seeking $10,000 from the Love Your Veggies grant program, offered by Hidden Valley Salad Dressings. Each grant award will support an elementary school in developing a program offering fresh vegetables and fruits in the 2010-'11 school year.

The Silent Hero grant — Helping Our Children ONe Meal at a Time is being pursued to increase student access to school breakfast programs. The grant offers up to $100,000 in grants to not only increase participation in school breakfast programs, but also emphasize the importance of all students eating a nutritious breakfast, whether at home or school.

A VECustomers Share Grant is also being pursued to make small cafeteria improvements, such as using ID scan cards instead of entering personal identification numbers as students go through the cafeteria checkout.

Dan Schlafer, 9th District representative, moved to approve the grant applications, along with revised operating procedures for the school nutrition program. The motion was supported by Brian Houston, 1st District representative. It was unanimously approved, with Richard Janeway, 2nd District representative; Roger Hyder, 4th District representative; and Mary Smith, 7th District represetative, absent.

In other action, the board approved the following:

•Martin Elementary Junior Beta Club to attend the state Beta Convention Nov. 23-24 at the Opryland Hotel.

•Pine View Elementary junior high field trip to Orlando, FL, May 5-9, 2010.

•Stone Memorial High School Lady Panther volleyball team trip to the Mid-Tennessee Classic held Oct. 9-10. The trip was previously approved by the executive committee.

•Penny L. Phipps, Sherry D. Monday, Clint Jay and Rhonda Jay were approved as volunteers at Cumberland County High School.

•Lynette Cleveland, Jill Denney, Tracie Greene, Sabrina Gunderson, Melissa Hedgecoth, Janie Hollingsworth, Lachricia Hunt, Mark Miller and Deanne Stone were approved as volunteers at SMHS.

•Bid specifications were approved for a new maintenance truck.

•The nutrition program was approved to dispose of surplus equipment, including a Sandwich Master microwave, Kelvinator deep freeze, Brother printer and five PIN pads. The equipment is no longer usable either because the cost to repair it would be more than to replace it or it is beyond repair. Items that can be sold for scrap metal will be disposed of that way.

•North Cumberland was approved to dispose of 47 desk and chair combination units, 12 desks and 15 small chairs.

•Pine View Elementary volunteers were approved. They are Michelle Altum, Jamie Bartley, Melissa Berry, Emily Binger, Jeff Bowman, Rebecca Bowman, Angelia Brown, Deborah Brown, Holly Bynum, Maxine Campbell, Crystal Carter, Lisa Carter, Mendell Carter, Tina Carter, Hope Crabtree, Melissa Dalton, Tiffany Davis, Samantha Dunn, Melissa Dyal, Marie Eaton, Danielle Feaster, Jennifer Gill, Dana Godsey, Leann Grayson, Sharon Grayson, Stacey Hayes, Amy Headrick, Sue Headrick, Lyndsey Hickey, Lisa Hoch, Renee Howard, Donna Ingram, Lisa Ingram, Sara Kilburn, Lousann Kindred, Heather Kindrick, Angie Kirkland, Cindy Kraus, Angie Lane and Adam Langley.

Lemert grave site rededication set Monday
The restoration of the gravesite of 1st Sgt. Milo Lemert, Cumberland County's only WWI Medal of Honor recipient, is finally complete after months of repair and rebuilding. A special dedication will be held May 28 at the City Cemetery at Sgt. Lemert's gravesite. The dedication will immediately follow the 11 a.m. annual Memorial Day Ceremony for Cumberland County in downtown Crossville. The public is invited to both events.

THP to enforce seat belt usage this Memorial Day weekend
