Suspect in purse snatching nabbed ... in court

A woman police sought in connection with a purse snatching incident at a Crossville Outlet Mall store was apprehended by police, standing in line to enter court last week.

Brandi Gunter, no age or address available, faces charges of two counts of theft, one count of attempted theft and one count of forgery, according to Maj. Mark Rosser's report.

On Nov. 14 Rena Dykes reported that her purse had been stolen from the Treasure Chest outlet store. On Nov. 17 her credit card was used at Food City, Walgreens and McDonald's, according to Rosser's report.

The following day, Rosser and Det. Kendall Hargis viewed a surveillance tape from one of the sites and developed a suspect. On Nov. 19 when Rosser entered the lobby of the Justice Center, he spotted a suspect standing in line to enter the courtroom, and asked a sheriff's deputy to detain the suspect while detectives talked to an unidentified woman with the suspect.

That person gave police permission to search a vehicle the two arrived to court in and resulted in the recovery of Dykes' wallet.

According to the report, the suspect has given police a statement and now faces an appearance in General Sessions Court.

It is not known if the suspect was at the Justice Center as a defendant or spectator.
