Cumberland County General Sessions Court held its first docket call in the new Justice Center addition Thursday and courtroom related offices are scheduled to move into their new offices on the third floor late next week.
Unlike facilities at the courthouse where Court Clerk Larry Sherrill's office is split between two locations, in the new facility the clerks who serve Sessions Court and clerks who serve Criminal Court and Circuit Court will share common offices with separate windows.
Also moving will be Clerk and Master Sue Tollett's office, which will place Juvenile Court and Chancery Court in proximity with the courtrooms the serve.
The new arrangement will help make all the offices involved more efficient and while enhancing accessibility for the public.

School zones may need revision
Cumberland County allows parents to transport their children to a school out of their residential zone, as long as it will not cause an overcrowding at the school. The Cumberland County Board of Education is questioning if that policy needs to make a distinction between space available without portable classrooms.

The Cumberland County Board of Education is considering building renovations that total about $5.8 million in an effort to get rid of portable classrooms at two schools, but some board members question why building a new school hasn't been considered.

Women Build prepares new home for family
About a dozen women gathered Saturday, May 11, to help paint a house in Cumberland County for a mother and her two-year-old daughter. The volunteers painted the walls of a three-bedroom, one and a half bath home, constructed by Habitat for Humanity.
