December 1903
+John Turner, S.W. Potter and T.H. Wilson were moving a car loaded with stave bolts to make room for a stock car intended to load with fat cattle. The stave car ran off the switch onto the main line and went west at a lively rate.
Thomas Allred was on the car but wasn’t familiar with working a car brake and he took a flier for the ground which reached without injury. The “wild” car caused much excitement as it was known the east bound passenger was overdue.
Agent Booth rushed to the central phone office to call Creston but the car had passed. Then he called Johnson Stand but it had already passed there. Section men from Creston caught and stopped the runaway about a mile west of Creston in time to flag the passenger car and avert a wreck.
The runaway made the 6 mile run from Crossville to Creston in 8 minutes. Sheriff Potter and John Q. Burnett both tried to catch up with the car on horses but were left behind.
