+Mrs. Nettie Ashburn of Monterey is 107. Her husband lived to be 100. She is in excellent health. For 20 years she has eaten 10 sticks of peppermint candy a week. Each day she drinks 1 cup of coffee and 2 glasses of milk. She enjoys smoking.

+The Crab Orchard Stone Company, four miles east of Crossville, has taken new activity this week. Around 30 teams and a crowd of negroes have arrived with a scraper and other necessary equipment for broadening the work of the stone quarry. Around two acres of ground will be stripped of dirt and prepared for a wide opening and more extensive work. The demand for the stone is increasing rapidly and is requiring the best efforts of the force of men employed to take care of the shipping requirements.

December 1993

+About 400 girls attended Camp Nakanawa last summer. They shared portions of their church contributions among several organizations. Camp Director Pepe Perron was pictured presenting a new rocking chair to the pediatrics department at CMC, a gift from the campers.

+The best selling toys this season were any Barney that talks for pre-schoolers; Aladdin figures or anything made by Little Tykes Co, for older youngsters. Girls like the My Size Barbie which is much larger than the original.

+ North Cumberland Elementary School 2nd graders responded to Gov. McWherter’s request to decorate the Capitol’s State Christmas tree with ornaments celebrating “Tennessee Treasures.” They sent a Tootsie Roll train chugging away to the Capitol filled with peppermints, licorice and chocolate kisses.
