Glade security officer pulls family from burning house
The husband of a couple who were awakened by a Fairfield Glade Public Safety officer who ran into their burning house and helped them from the residence said the officer may very well have saved their lives.
"I went to bed early. We all were asleep when he came in and hollered, 'Get up! Get up! The house is on fire,'" said Kevin Stephens of 823 Tuttle Lane. "I grabbed the baby and we got out. We sure were lucky."
The officer credited with running into the burning house is Jeff Fitzgerald, a two-year veteran of the Glade security force and a former sheriff's deputy.
Stephens and his wife, Leah, and baby Jacob escaped into a wintery mix of ice, snow and rain in sub-freezing temperatures with little more than what they were wearing.
The fire call came in around midnight and because of the icy road conditions and the proximity to Fairfield Glade, the Fairfield Glade Fire Department was dispatched to provide community aid to the Cumberland County Fire Department.
The unidentified caller told emergency dispatchers flames were showing, that there was no vehicle parked at the residence and it was unknown if anyone was inside.
Fitzgerald responded with Glade firefighters and was first on the scene to discover the front of the house fully enveloped in flames. He dashed to the rear of the house, beat on the back door and got the family safely out and provided them the warm shelter of his security vehicle until emergency shelter could be provided.
Dozens of volunteers joined the county fire department in battling the blaze and remained on the scene for about two hours.
Damage to the residence was major and it was unknown what could be salvaged by the couple.
Cumberland County Emergency Management Agency and the Cumberland County Chapter of the American Red Cross also responded to the scene.
