CROSSVILLE —
Cumberland County's jobless rate fell from 8.9 percent in August to 8.2 percent in September, according to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
Across the state, the unemployment rate decreased in 94 counties and increased in one, bringing the state unemployment rate to 8.3 percent, down from the August revised rate of 8.5 percent. The national unemployment rate for September was 7.8 percent, .3 percentage point lower than the August rate.
In Cumberland County, the jobless rate of 8.2 percent means that, of the county's 24,680-person labor force, 2,020 people were without work in September.
Williamson and Lincoln counties registered the state's lowest unemployment rate, with both at 5.2 percent. Knox County followed at 5.9 percent.
Scott County has the highest unemployment rate in the state at 16.1 percent. That's down from the August rate of 17.5 percent.
The Knox County rate of 5.9 percent was the state's lowest major metropolitan rate, down from the August rate of 6.7 percent. Davidson County was 6.6 percent, down from 7.4 percent in August. Hamilton County was 7.1 percent and Shelby County was 8.5 percent.
The state unemployment rate of 8.3 percent is the lowest rate in Tennessee since June. Over the past year, Tennessee's unemployment rate declined from 9.1 percent to 8.3 percent, while the national rate declined from 9 percent to 7.8 percent.
Over the past year, there has been an increase of 20,400 nonfarm jobs, with increases in manufacturing and education and health services. The trade, transportation and utilities sector lost jobs in the past year, as did information services and financial activities.
