CROSSVILLE —
A Cumberland County man entered a "best interest plea" last week to the sexual battery of a child, avoiding a trial, and will appear in Criminal Court in February for sentencing.
Hubert Ray Brown, 65, of 1266 Creston Rd., entered the plea before Judge Leon Burns last Tuesday and received a three-year sentence, but conditions of the agreement ask Burns to determine whether that sentence will be served in full, in part or will be served on probation.
In addition, Brown must be supervised as a sex offender for life and must register with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation as a sex offender, meeting all requirements of state law under the sex offender registry.
Brown was accused of "accomplishing sexual contact" with a then 12-year-old girl on April 1 of this year. The indictment listed the victim, three potential witnesses and Sheriff's Investigator John Haynes as witnesses against Brown. Witnesses are not identified in this story to protect the identity of the young victim.
The Department of Children's Services was also involved in the investigation.
