Crossville cyclist struck by pickup in White County

CROSSVILLE — A Crossville man died from injuries suffered when he was struck by a vehicle riding a bicycle in White County and now the driver of the pickup truck is facing charges.

Alan P. David, 58, of Ironwood Circle in Deer Creek subdivision, described by friends as an avid cyclist, died at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga where he had been flown after suffering injuries in the crash.

Jeffrey Maxwell, 55, of Baxter Rd., Baxter, is charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, driving under the influence and driving on a revoked license as a result of the incident.

The crash occurred Aug. 12 on Burgess Falls Rd. near the Shoemake Dr. intersection when David, riding his bicycle east on Burgess Falls Rd., was struck by a 1996 Ford F-150 pickup driven by Maxwell. The crash occurred on a Sunday morning around 11:30 a.m., according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Trooper David Hickey reported that Maxwell's truck crossed over the center line for unexplained reasons and struck the bike rider head-on.

A field sobriety test led officers to believe that Maxwell was under the influence of something, leading to a blood test being administered. Results of that test have not been returned by the state lab.

Maxwell was placed under $250,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in White County General Sessions Court on Sept. 12. At press time, he remains jailed in Sparta.

In addition to Trooper Hickey, Sgt. Joe Agee, Trooper Eric McCormick and Trooper Ashley Mercer of the THP Critical Incident Respnse Team are investigating the crash.

A native of Detroit, MI, David served in the U.S. Air Force for four years and worked for the U.S. government, UNISYS Corp., Computer Sciences Corp and Ulticom as a computer systems engineer and program manager for the Department of Defense and in private sectors. His work took him twice overseas where he assisted the Australian Navy.

He retired ten years ago and moved to the Crossville area. In addition to being an avid bicyclist, David enjoyed playing golf.

David is survived by his wife, Denise, and mother, Cecilia Merrill of Crossville and several brothers and stepbrothers. A full obituary may be found inside this edition.
