8-year-old burned in house fire

An eight-year-old girl who awakened to flames around her was able to rush to a bedroom and wake her mom despite burns to her legs, fire officials said. The mom, little brother and the burn victim escaped with the clothes they were wearing but they lost everything in the Lake Tansi house fire Monday morning.

Two other family members were away from the residence at the time of the fire.

When Cumberland County firefighters arrived on the scene they found the ranch-style Kanapolis Dr. home fully enveloped in flames. Several fire trucks responded to the fire and water was shuttled to the scene.

The house is owned by Bonnie Jambor and is shared with her granddaughter, Jennifer Barron, her boyfriend, Charles Hayes, and Jennifer's two children, the eight-year-old girl and a four-year-old son.

Reportedly the mom was sleeping in a rear bedroom and the eight-year-old on a sofa. The eight-year-old suffered first-, and possibly second-degree burns to her legs caused by plastic on the couch, officials said.

She was taken by ambulance to CMC. Her condition at press time was not available but her injuries were described as non-life threatening.

The county fire department remained on the scene for nearly three hours. That department and the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department is investigating cause of the fire.

Crossville/Cumberland County Emergency Management Agency and the county chapter of the American Red Cross also responded to the scene to offer assistance to firefighters and the victims.
