Young Marines pay respects to Sgt. York

Cumberland County Young Marines spent the Young Marine Birthday, Oct. 17, in Pall Mall, TN.

The Cumberland County Young Marines had the privilege of taking part in the first Sergeant York Day in Pall Mall on Oct. 18. The Young Marines were planning on attending the 90th anniversary of Sgt. York’s famous battle he fought in France in the Agronne Forest. When they called the park for information about the celebration, the Young Marines were asked if they would like to take part. Of course, they accepted. The Young Marines later asked if they would be able to come a day earlier and celebrate the Young Marine Birthday there in the park. The group was granted permission and the Young Marines not only celebrated their birthday and the Sgt. York Day, they stayed until Sunday and helped do some clean up around the park.

The Young Marines were able to present the colors at the opening ceremonies with the TN DAV Color Guard and then again later in the day with the Sgt. York’s JROTC. Everyone enjoyed the program especially the historians rendition of Sgt. York’s Life. The group hopes to take part in this again in the future.

The Young Marines have pictures of this weekend along with the other things they have done thought the year on their Web site, www.leaguelineup.com/youngmarines. There are also pictures of the Young Marines at Sgt. York’s Farm on the Sgt. York Web site, www.sgtyork.org, under event "Sgt. York’s 1st Annual Day."

Young Marines will be holding their graduation and promotion ceremonies on Dec. 20 at 11 a.m. at the Crossville Housing Activity Center at 326 Taylor St. Everyone is welcome.
