Try to stay in your seats when the Cajun music starts, bounce to the Zulu African beat, sway to the catchy rhythms of Eastern European music, and see if you can sit still when the lively Klezmer band hits the stage.

The Crossville Arts Council in partnership with Downtown Crossville, Inc. presents its first International Festival of Music and Dance on Main Street in Crossville on Saturday, May 23, from 3-7 p.m.

At 3 p.m. Roux du Bayou, a Cajun band that’s “the real deal,” takes the stage. At 3:45 you’ll hear the Zulu drum beat as the Umdabu Dance Company from Birmingham, AL, arrives in their native costumes. The Nashville Folk Dancers arrive at 4:30 in the bright traditional dress of Eastern Europe, and they’ll also teach adventurous souls a few dances. At 5:30, Dor L’ Dor, a Klezmer band from Oak Ridge will get you out of your seat to dance in the street.

Admission is free. Bring a lawn chair. Food vendors will be there. The music and dancing take place during the Classic Car Cruise-In on Main Street in Crossville on Saturday, May 23, from 3-7 p.m. Park off Main Street behind the courthouse, in lots on West Avenue, or at the First United Methodist Church. This event is sponsored by the Cumberland County Bank and is made possible by a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Lemert grave site rededication set Monday
The restoration of the gravesite of 1st Sgt. Milo Lemert, Cumberland County's only WWI Medal of Honor recipient, is finally complete after months of repair and rebuilding. A special dedication will be held May 28 at the City Cemetery at Sgt. Lemert's gravesite. The dedication will immediately follow the 11 a.m. annual Memorial Day Ceremony for Cumberland County in downtown Crossville. The public is invited to both events.
