County physician A.J. McClarney picked up Chas. Edwards, a Negro, at Crab Orchard. The man had smallpox and was placed in the pest house. He was thickly broken out but is doing well.
To Teachers – We have decided to hold our county institute for one week only this year in order, if possible, all the schools may be started before the first of August. At that time there will be a complete overhauling of the district and director under the new law.

R.L. Hughes of Pomona found a half-dollar in some slag that had been hauled from South Pittsburgh. It bore the date 1845 and was very little worn. This 84 year-old coin as are American coins approximately 100 years old are rare.
When the gas tax goes into effect in Illinois August 1, every state and the District of Columbia will have a gas tax. The taxes produce vast sums which are most generously used in building and maintaining roads.
1993 June
Signed and numbered prints of the original Palace Theater painting by Bob Hoover went on sale. The proceeds go toward restoration of the Palace.
Congressman Jim Cooper appointed Benjamin J. Ford, son of Barry and Mary Ford, as a congressional page for the June 13 to July 10 session of the 1993 summer page term in Washington, D.C. Ben has completed his junior year at CCHS. Congressman Cooper said it is a high-honor to be chosen since there are only 66 pages chosen each term from all across the United States. Academic requirements are very strict. Ben plans to attend law school, practice law and become involved in politics.

Lemert grave site rededication set Monday
The restoration of the gravesite of 1st Sgt. Milo Lemert, Cumberland County's only WWI Medal of Honor recipient, is finally complete after months of repair and rebuilding. A special dedication will be held May 28 at the City Cemetery at Sgt. Lemert's gravesite. The dedication will immediately follow the 11 a.m. annual Memorial Day Ceremony for Cumberland County in downtown Crossville. The public is invited to both events.

County to use new district boundaries to fill vacancy
The Cumberland County Commission approved a resolution to use new district boundary lines in the August County General Election in order to fill the vacancy created by the death of 9th District Commissioner Clyde Cramer.

THP to enforce seat belt usage this Memorial Day weekend
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is planning to step up efforts to enforce seat belt usage over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. State Troopers along with other state and local law enforcement agencies are participating in the national seat belt enforcement campaign, Click it or Ticket, May 21 through June 3.
