County authorizes mayor to sign agreements for Hwy. 127 N. road project

CROSSVILLE — County commissioners approved a resolution authorizing Cumberland County Mayor Kenneth Carey Jr. to sign a proposal with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) for the expansion and road improvement project of Hwy. 127 N.

The resolution was unanimously approved during last week's monthly county commission meeting.

Resolution 01-2013-1 authorizes Carey to sign a proposal with TDOT for work to be conducted on Hwy. 127 N. The improvement project begins just north of I-40 and runs north to Legion Rd.

It was approved after a motion was made by Mike Harvel, 7th District commissioner. Harvel's motion was supported by Roy Turner, 7th District commissioner.

A $9,534 budget amendment resolution was approved to allow the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department to accept grant funds for law enforcement equipment. The funds come from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Formula program and is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) stimulus funds.

The resolution 01-2013-3 was approved unanimously after a motion was made by Nancy Hyder, 2nd District commissioner. Hyder's motion was supported by Dave Hassler, 3rd District commissioner.

The county also approved resolution 01-2013-4, which is the authorization for County Mayor Carey to apply for funds for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for South Cumberland Utility District (SCUD). It also allows Carey the authority to sign the necessary agreements with the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development to receive and administer the funds if approved.

The county is authorized to apply for funds from the CDBG on behalf of a utility district. The total project amount is estimated to be $460,000, the amount requested in the grant is $358,800 with matching funds of $101,200 coming from SCUD.

If approved, the funds will be used to provide water line extensions to areas within the SCUD service area that do not currently have public water service.
