Pilot killed in crash

CROSSVILLE — Pikeville physician Dr. Harold Cameron MacManus Jr. has been identified as the pilot of single-engine plane that crashed in the Tampa Bay area Sunday.

The cause of the crash is not yet determined, but the Tampa Bay Times reports the Piper Arrow went down shortly after taking off from Tampa North Aero Park bound for Crossville. The air traffic control tower lost contact with MacManus' cell phone off the end of a northwest runway around 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

About 30 hours later, the wreckage was discovered in a remote area four miles north of the flight center.

The crash is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
