Jets split District 6AAA games with Warren County last Thursday

On a stormy night in McMinnville, the Cumberland County High School basketball teams made up a District 6AAA double-header with the Warren County Pioneer teams on Thursday night, as the Jets defeated the Pioneers 80-48, but the Lady Jets were beaten 59-53 by the Lady Pioneers.

Warren County 59, CCHS 53: Taylor Vaden led the Lady Jets (11-9, 0-3) with 19 points, four rebounds and three steals, while Jaclyn Reagan added 15 markers, four caroms, two assists and two steals, and Emily Scarbrough had 11 points, three boards, one assist and two steals.

Tessa King gave the Lady Pioneers a 2-0 lead.

With 7:17 left in the first quarter, a thunderstorm knocked out the lights on the gym floor, sending the players to their respective benches. On the second attempt, the lights came on after being out for 10 minutes.

With play resumed, Reagan converted a layup to tie the game at 2-2, but the Lady Jets aided four three-pointers — two by Scarbrough and one each by Reagan and Beth Ann Swafford — and took a 16-13 lead with 1:50 left in the quarter.

Warren County finished the quarter with a 6-0 run for a 19-16 advantage by quarter's end.

Cumberland County was five of 15 from the field, while Warren County was eight of 13 with three turnovers.

The Lady Pioneers hit eight of nine shots from the field in the second quarter to outscore CCHS 17-14 for a 36-30 advantage at the break.

Vaden scored eight of her 19 points in the second quarter for the Lady Jets, who were six of 13 from the floor with one turnover.

Warren County started the third quarter with a 5-0 spurt for a 41-30 lead, but Scarbrough's third trey triggered a 9-2 run to slice the deficit to 43-39 with two minutes left, but a trey by Lauren Wilkinson put Warren County ahead 46-39 with 1:35 remaining in the stanza.

Warren County called time with 1:35 remaining, but Coach Josh Epperson had to call with 1:12 left, as his team had only four players on the court when play resumed. The score would stand 46-39 at the end of the frame.

The Lady Jets rallied to slice the lead to 56-53 with 1:15 remaining in the game on an Erica Lane three-pointer, but Kassidy Kominos hit the first of two free throws with 39.9 ticks left for a 57-53 lead.

After CCHS missed several attempts for bucket, Wilkinson was fouled with five seconds left, missed the front end of a one plus one, but tipped her missed shot as time ran out for the final margin of 59-53.

CCHS (53): Scarbrough 11, Lane 5, Swafford 3, Green 0, Vaden 19, Rector 0, Reagan 15, Hankins 0.

WCHS (59): Kominos 1, Smith 6, Roller 2, King 13, Wilkenson 22, L.B. McKinley 6, Wood 2, S. Roller 9.

CCHS 80, WCHS 48: It was another team effort, as Kyle Pritchard led the way with 18 points, five rebounds and one steal to lead the Jets (12-6, 1-2) over the Pioneers. Derreck Hankins added 16 markers, three rebounds and one assist, while John Bilbrey added 12 points with four rebounds, one assist and five steals.

Eleven of the 13 Jets contributed to the win — Matt Jones (four points, one rebound, two assists and steals); Caleb Parsons (five points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals); Brandon Hawkins (two points, one board and one steal); Robbie Poore (four points, one carom and one steal); Steven Hill (nine markers, two boards and one assist), Terryl Bowen (three points, four rebounds); Andrew Cravens (six points, five rebounds and one steal); and Todd Threet (one steal).

The biggest stat of the game was free throw shooting. CCHS was 32 of 52, as the Pioneers were whistled for 36 fouls, including two intentional fouls, while WCHS was five of 10 from the charity stripe of 15 CCHS fouls. There was a double technical called (one each player).

No one was in double figures for the Pioneers, as all 17 dressed saw action.

With the score knotted at 4-4, a Pritchard layup triggered an 11-0 run to give his team a 15-4 lead with 2:42 remaining in the first quarter quarter.

Warren County outscored CCHS 9-4 in the final 2:27 to slice the lead to 19-13 at quarter's end.

CCHS was nine of 12 from the field and one of two from the charity stripe with five turnovers, while WCHS was five of 13 with six miscues. Pritchard had 10 points for the Jets.

With thunder and lightning outside, the Jets were lighten it up inside — five of nine from the floor and 13 of 22 from the charity stripe — to outscore the hosts 24-14 for a 43-27 lead at the break.

Pritchard had seven points for the Jets, while Bilbrey was five of six from the charity stripe.

With 7:39 left in the third quarter, Cravens was going for a layup, but was nailed by two Warren County Pioneers. The senior hit the deck with a thud, causing the officials to call an intentional foul. He left the game with the WCHS training staff, with Bilbrey, who converted free throws earlier the game on another intentional foul, was true to form, giving the Jets a 45-27 advantage.

The Jets would finish the quarter with a 21-11 run for a 66-38 advantage, thanks to 10 of 15 free throws and six of 11 shooting from the floor. The defense forced eight Pioneer turnovers.

CCHS would stretch the lead to 74-38 with 5:56 left in the game, putting the mercy rule into effect for the remainder of the game. WCHS would finish the quarter with a 10-6 for the final margin.

For the game, CCHS was 23 of 35 from the field and 32 of 52 from the charity stripe, including 10 of 14 by Bilbrey, while the Pioneers were 20 of 51 from the field and five of 10 from the stripe with 28 turnovers.

Warren County (48): Turner 0, Thrower 6, Reagan 0, Myers 0, Stephens 8, Britton 0, Blair 2, Brewer 0, McCorkle 0, Seamons 4, Locke 3, Daniels 5, Adams 2, Bond 8, Lock 0, Hall 2, Glenn 8.

Schedule: Cumberland County will travel to Coffee County Tuesday night and will host Warren County on Friday for homecoming, after last Friday's game with the Chattanooga Patriots was canceled and Saturday's games at Sunbright were canceled, as the Tigers had to make up a district game.

Everyone who attends Friday's homecoming games with Warren County will be able to vote for the 2010 CCHS basketball homecoming king and queen. Ballots will be at the ticket gate and will be taken through halftime of the girls contest. The winners will be announced between games. The junior varsity game begins at 4:15 p.m.
