CROSSVILLE —
Cumberland County High School senior pitcher Kelly Walker, 17, daughter of Debbie Walker and the late Edward Walker, signed a softball scholarship for 2011-'12 with Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens.
She will be attending TWC with a full scholarship in the fall of 2011, and will be majoring in a four-year BS degree in nursing and then pursue a Nurse Anesthetist degree.
Walker, who has a 3.88 GPA at CCHS, has been playing softball since she was five years old, and starting pitching when she was nine.
She started attending the Diamond Pitching Academy in Rockwood with her pitching Coach Darrell Williams at age 10. Williams has been by her side all the way.
She went once or twice a week and still attends weekly. If needed, Williams would be available by phone during a big game.
The left-handed Lady Jet has eight different pitches and has great command of all her pitches, and also plays first base.
Walker has always played ball, from coach/pitch on up, and started playing travel ball at the age of 10 with the Blue Angels, which changed their names to the Cyclones.
She played with them for about four years, and was approached by several out of town teams, including the Knoxville Blaze which is coached by Steve Farmer.
She has started her freshman, sophomore and junior seasons at Cumberland County High School.
The senior is looking forward to a great season.
Her post-season awards include All-District, Best Defensive Player, Most Valuable Player and Best Pitcher with her high school and travel team.
Her play has taken her all over Tennessee, and she has played at the World Series in Panama City, FL, and Pigeon Forge, TN, and several collegiate exposure tournaments and numerous ASA, NSA, SEAAA, USFA and USSSA tournaments.
She is the granddaughter of John and Ruth York and Paul Walker, and has one brother, John Paul Walker.
The Lady Bulldogs are coached by Tony Brooks and Cyndy Gilpin-Davis, a former Lady Jet basketball, softball and volleyball player.
