Panthers beat Redskins for fifth district win

CROSSVILLE — The Stone Memorial basketball teams continued their farewell tour into District 4AA, as they split a pair of games at Loudon Tuesday night. The Panthers defeated the Redskins 87-59, while the Lady Panthers were beaten 49-38 by the Lady Redskins.

SMHS 87, Loudon 59: Coach Neil Capps' Panthers remained unbeaten in District 4AA at 5-0 with their win over the Redskins (1-4, 8-12) in their final regular season battle, as both teams will be leaving 4AA next school year.

SMHS is moving into District 6AAA, while Loudon is moving into District 5AA.

After Tuesday's action, Christian Academy of Knoxville (CAK) is second at 4-1, followed by Alcoa (3-2), Kingston (2-3), Loudon (1-4) and Scott County (0-5).

The Panthers took control of the game early with a 28-9 first quarter, but the hosts outscored SMHS 23-20 in the second quarter to slice the deficit to 48-32 at the break.

SMHS outscored Loudon 21-11 in the third quarter and 18-16 in the fourth quarter to take the victory.

Leading scorers for the Panthers were Gage Spence (four points), Brock Rowan (21 points), Tyler Yoder (13 points), Brandon Thomas (three points), Justin Simmons (26 points), Luke Matthews (nine points), Parker Hill (three points), Colin Russell (five points) and Frank Heilmeir (one point).

Rowan had four three-pointers, and Matthews had one.

Loudon 49, SMHS 38: Coach John Walker's Lady Panthers remained in a three-way tie for fourth place in the district with Scott County and Kingston after their 11-point loss to the Lady Redskins.

SMHS is tied with Scott County and Kingston at 1-4, behind Alcoa (5-0), CAK (4-1) and Loudon (3-2).

Loudon led 12-11 after one quarter, but stretched the lead to 24-16 at the break with a 12-5 second quarter. The Lady Redskins outscored SMHS 14-10 in the third quarter for a 38-26 lead; however, the Lady Panthers scored the Lady Redskins 12-11 in the fourth quarter for the final margin.

Leading SMHS were Tiffany Cokkinias (six points, two rebounds, two assists, four steals), Jordan Thompson (four points, one rebound, one assist), Emily Bryant (one rebound, one steal), Jacki Livesay (two rebounds, three steals), Kirsten Potter (two points), Kerigan Smith (two points), Faith Van Ruden (four points, one rebound, two assists, two steals), Abby Griffin (six points, one assist, two steals), Bailey Rutledge, Courtney White (10 points, five rebounds, two steals), Sidney Early (two points, two rebounds), Makayla Kington (two points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals), Riley Hunt (one steal) and Lacey Melton.

The Lady Panthers were 14 of 45 from the field and five of eight from the free throw line with 19 rebounds, eight assists, 17 steals and 15 turnovers.

Schedule: SMHS hosted CAK Thursday night, weather permitting, and will travel to Alcoa Tuesday. The Kingston at SMHS game snowed out Jan. 17 will be made up Feb. 11.

Harris wins Region 2A/AA singles tennis gold medal
Stone Memorial sophomore Ali Harris won the Region 2A/AA tennis singles championship Tuesday at Pigeon Forge High School to earn her a second-straight berth in next week's state meet in Murfreesboro at MTSU.
Harris defeated Chesnie Nichols of Carter High School in the first round of the tournament in straight sets 6-0, 6-0, according to SMHS coach Ray Hawn.

Hospice of Cumberland County real winner in 22nd annual tournament
The 22nd Hospice Benefit Golf Tournament was played May 8 at Lake Tansi Golf Course. The golfers gathered at the Lake Tansi pavilion for a delicious lunch from Big Boy’s Barbeque. The full field of 33 teams took to the course with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.
