Friday night at Jet Stadium was a night reserved to recognize the CCHS senior athletes from the football, cross country, girls soccer, volleyball and bowling teams, along with the band and cheerleaders, but the Kingston Yellow Jackets spoiled the celebration, taking a 28-14 victory.
Both teams had their offenses going on the still soggy turf, with the Yellow Jackets amassing 342 total yards (171 rushing and 171 passing) compared to 323 for the Jets (206 rushing and 117 passing), but turnovers and penalties were the difference.
Kingston picked off two passes, but lost two fumbles and were penalized five times for 50 yards, while CCHS was penalized nine times for 79 yards and recovered two fumbles.
Kyle Gouge completed eight of 15 passes for 171 yards with one touchdown and rushed for 16 yards on five carries. His favorite target was Etimilin Phillips with six catches for 134 yards with one score. Coty Groves rushed for 89 yards on 15 carries with two scores.
Tyler Adams picked off two passes for the Yellow Jackets, coached by former CCHS assistant Vic King (1971-'75). The Yellow Jackets also blocked a Jet punt.
Tyler Howard rushed for 133 yards on 18 carries with two scores and caught three passes for 37 yards, while Terryl Bowen rushed for 60 yards on 16 carries and completed eight of 15 passes for 117 yards with two PICs. Brandon Lindsey had two receptions for 37 yards, while Kyle Pritchard had two catches for 20 yards.
Tim Bolden returned the opening kick 49 yards to the Jet 34, giving the Yellow Jackets an opportunity to dent the scoreboard. Kingston picked up 22 yards rushing on five carries, but the Jet defense led by Dakota Rucker, Matt Green, Eric Fitzgerald, Daniel Gonzales and Jonathan Cummings stopped the visitors on downs at the Jet 12-yard line.
The Jet offensive line of Josh Hodgin, Aaron Miller, Alex Cotter, Eric Fitzgerald and Roger Norris helped the Bowen and Green pick up 21 yards on five carries. Bowen completed one of three passes for 25 yards, but the Yellow Jacket defense would force a punt.
Justin Piercy's punt pinned the Yellow Jackets at the Yellow Jacket 20-yard line. Four plays later, Gough hit Phillips for a 64-yard strike for a 6-0 lead with 4:14 remaining in the quarter. Andrew Spellman's PAT made it 7-0.
A short kickoff return by Gonzales put the Jets at their 26-yard line.
The Jet offense would use up the final 4:14 of the first quarter to move the pigskin into Kingston territory. Bowen completed two of three passes for 16 yards — one to Pritchard for 12 yards and a four-yarder to Howard, while Bowen carried the ball three times for 21 yards, as the first quarter ended. Both teams were penalized in the series.
When the second quarter started, the Jets were penalized for five yards, but CCHS would used 3:35 of the clock to march into the end zone to score on Howard's first score, a one-yard run with 8:25 left in the half.
Skylar Keyes booted the PAT to tie the contest at 7-7.
On the ensuing kick, the ball was muffed by a Yellow Jacket player, but Tyler Rollins bounced on the wet ball at their Kingston 34-yard line.
Four play's later, Adams picked off Bowen to stop the drive.
Kingston, behind the running of Groves and the passing of Gough, drove the distance in eight plays to take a 13-7 lead on Groves' three-yard run with 3:44 left in the half. Groves carried the ball five times for 33 yards. Spellman's PAT gave the Yellow Jackets a 14-7 lead at the break.
An 11-yard kickoff return by Gonzales gave the Jets an opportunity to tie the game at the half.
CCHS' running game produced 35 yards on five carries, while Bowen completed hits to Lindsey for a 20-yard strike and Cody Vance for a 13-yarder. Two penalties for 15 yards hindered the drive.
Adams would pick off Bowen to kill the drive.
Kingston then ran out the clock to take a 14-7 lead at the break.
CCHS rushed for 97 yards on 22 carries and completed seven of 13 passes for 100 yards, while Kingston rushed for 55 yards on 12 carries and was five of eight passing for 108 yards.
Tyler Wallace returned the second half kick to the Jet 25.
Four plays later, Howard scored from one-yard out to slice the lead to 14-13 with 10:34 left in the third quarter. Keyes' PAT tied the game at 14-14.
Phillps returned the ensuing kick 28 yards to midifeld. Eleven plays later, Groves scored from the one to give the Yellow Jackets a 20-14 lead. Spellman's PAT made it 21-14.
Groves carried the ball five times for 34 yards, while Gough passed 23 yards to Phillips, who was double covered by Gonzales and Bowen.
Steven Hill, Daniel Forte, Cummings, Andrew Phipps, Dakota Rucker, Cody Suggs and Matt Green also made defensive stops for the Jets.
Vandarus Dawson recovered a short kick at the Jet 48, but the Yellow Jacket defense would hold the CCHS to three plays and out, thanks to three quarterback sacks.
Piercy's punt put Kingston at their 21-yard line.
With no time left in the third quarter, Zack Osgood raced 11 yards into the end zone for a touchdown for a 27-14 lead. Spellman made it 28-14.
Gonzales' 12-yard kickoff return gave the Jets the ball at their 34-yard line. The Jets moved the ball on the ground into Yellow Jacket territory, but a couple of holding penalties would stymie the drive, which ended with a punt by Piercy.
The punt was blocked by Kingston, which took over at the Jet 48. Kingston also used their running attack to move the ball into Jet territory, where the Jet defense of Green, Forte, Vance, Cummings and Wallace would stop the visitors on a fumble recovery by Green in the waning seconds of the game.
CCHS ran one play, as time expired in the contest.
The Jets (2-7, 0-3) travel to White County Friday night to face the Warriors in the regular season finale. A win will make the Jets playoff eligible.
