Stone gets two district wins over Scott County
The Panthers and Lady Panthers both garnered wins over the Highlanders of Scott County on Friday to get their District 4AA competition off to a good start, with the Lady Panthers winning 59-44 and the Panthers taking a 78-63 victory.
•SMHS 59, Scott County 44: The girls could only manage a slim lead over the visitors as they appeared sluggish to start the contest but came on strong in the second half to claim a 59-44 win.
Coach Tim Smith said, "We just didn't have any consistency about us and we discussed that at halftime. We just weren't playing with any fire inside and we have to do that to come away with wins."
The Lady Panthers led 13-12 at the end of the first period with Kelli Keck leading the scoring for Stone with seven points, and a low scoring second period in which the Stone girls scored only eight points left the game very close as the hosts' lead was only 21-19.
The halftime talk was obviously effective as Stone matched their first half output and put 21 more points on the board to claim a 42-26 lead. Keck hit a long three-pointer at the buzzer to establish that margin.
Smith commented, "We're still looking for some consistency in our senior leadership. We have to get that vocal leadership going. Leslie Brown didn't get her usual totals and we've got to get everyone to step up and get this team going."
Erin Keyes did step it up in that crucial third period and hit three treys to get the team on track. Smith said, "Erin's production from long range in the third was a big key for us."
The Lady Panthers maintained their double digit lead throughout the final quarter to take the win.
Post player Kristen Roark went down with an injury in the game and the extent of that injury won't be known until possibly mid-week. Roark's presence inside is a big part of the Panther attack.
Kayla Daniell was the scoring leader for Stone as she put up 13 points with Keck and Keyes contributing 12 and 11 respectively. Brown tallied nine points as Roark and Brooke Kennedy scored four each and Nicole Hassler and Morgan Bridges scored two apiece.
Smith's squad will now take on CCHS (5-1) on Tuesday evening.
•SMHS 78, Scott County 63: Brandon Cole was again the big key early as he scored 10 of his game high 30 points in the initial quarter, as the Panthers took a slim 19-17 lead on their way to a 78-63 victory.
Both teams started the contest applying pressure defense but each squad was able to handle it effectively.
The Panthers stretched their lead to 35-31 in the second quarter as Dustin Dishman scored all seven of his points in that period.
The host Panthers managed to move that lead out to 11 in the third period, and hot three-point shooting by the Highlanders was all that kept the contest that close. The Panthers scored 23 points in the closing period with Cole again working free at close range to score 12 including two of three from the charity stripe.
A total of 10 Panthers made it into the scoring column.
In addition to Cole and Dishman, Alex Kiser was good for a total of 10 and Robert Troino and Mason Fox each scored seven. Zack Sherrill scored six, David Keyes five, Brock Rowan three, Larry Breeden two and Dustin Melton one in the win. The Panthers will now take on crosstown rival Cumberland County High School (4-2) on Tuesday. Both contests on Tuesday should be very competitive as all their previous encounters have been. A large crowd is always on hand when these squads meet.
•Schedule: After hosting CCHS Tuesday, SMHS will host Clarkrange Friday evening. The Lady Buffaloes lost to Jackson County on Friday 57-47, while the Buffaloes were defeated 73-63.
