Panthers roll but girls fall to Clarkrange
Stone Memorial High School closed out its homestand Friday night by splitting a double-header with Clarkrange. The Lady Panthers were defeated 59-37, while the Panthers won 80-52.
Clarkrange 59, SMHS 37: The Lady Buffaloes of Clarkrange may have lost some talent from their undefeated state champions of last year, but they showed that they are to be reckoned with again as they defeated the Lady Panthers of Stone Memorial by a 59-37 margin.
The Lady Panthers fell behind early and just couldn't get a sustained comeback together as Clarkrange took a 19-7 first quarter lead and stretched that to 35 -13 at the end of the first half. Stone's leading scorer Leslie Brown was shut out in the first half and finished the evening with only six points, well below her average. Stone had no one in double figures as Erin Keyes led the scoring for the hosts with eight points.
The Lady Buffaloes were able to score from inside and outside as they managed seven three pointers with Tara Donhauser and Suzie Cooper scoring three each. Carly Dickens and Molly Heady scored from inside and Stone's post players Morgan Bridges and Brooke Foster did a credible job in the absence of injured Kristen Roark but both were plagued by foul trouble and Clarkrange was just too strong inside on this evening.
Kelli Keck, another stalwart for the Lady Panthers, could manage only two points for the night and it was a cold shooting outing for the Stone girls as a team.
Ashley Cox nailed two treys for her total of six points as Foster and Nicole Hassler scored five each. Kayla Daniell and Mackenzi Stephens had two apiece and Julia Webb scored one in the loss.
SMHS 80, Clarkrange 52: it was quite the opposite as the Panthers jumped out to a 12 point lead at 18-6 and used a pressure defense throughout the contest enroute to a 80-52 win over the Buffaloes. Panther assistant Neil Capps said, "This was just our night. Clarkrange is a team with a lot of pride and they are always very competitive and will play you very hard. They are young and our press got them in some foul trouble and we were able to take advantage."
The Panthers led by a 60-31 margin after three periods and Coach Buck and his staff were able to get all of their players some valuable time on the floor. Capps said, "It is always good to get everyone into the game. Our kids had fun and played hard. We got a little loose at the end and gave up some offensive boards and didn't defend as well as we should have, but overall, the effort was good."
The Panthers were led in scoring by Robert Troino who had five treys in his total of 24 points. Dustin Melton scored 11 points with Larry Breeden contributing nine and Zack Sherrill and Brandon Cole eight apiece. Dustin Dishman tossed in seven points, as Mason Fox and Alex Kiser totalled four each. Others scoring were Brock Rowan with three and David Keyes with two in the victory.
Stone now travels to Sparta on Tuesday evening to take on White County. Both contests promise to be exciting. Capps said, "White County is a young, big and athletic team. We managed to beat them up here earlier, but we can expect a real game down there. Teams can always run a little faster and jump a little higher at home with their crowd behind them. They will be fired up and ready to play."
Game time in Sparta for the girls' contest is 6:30 p.m.
