SMHS wrestling team splits matches
The SMHS wrestling team split with Tullahoma and Warren County last Thursday in Cookeville. They defeated Warren County 48-32 and lost to Tullahoma 18-63.
Against Warren County, the Panthers received pins by Matt McCarty, Bob Sapp, John Adams and Jonathan Waldrup.
“Matt and Bob are really starting to make some improvements that are showing in their matches,” noted Coach Brian Parker.
Some other tough matches that had a lot of action were the 119 and 135 classes. Zach Heavilon lost a close match 12-16 at 119. There were nine reversals in the match that fought hard to the very end.
“Zach’s match was exciting and there was a lot of action. These matches are good for him because he can see where he needs to improve,” said Parker.
Austin Brickle (135) was penalized three times the first period for locked hands and had to try to win the match on takedowns over the next two periods. He took his opponent down 14 times before locking his hands a fourth time to be disqualified.
“Austin’s match was a heartbreaker because he worked so hard to win on takedowns. He did a great job especially as tired as he was. It was a shame to loss on a penalty. I believe he has learned a lesson from this,” said Parker.
Tullahoma had a very tough team with a lot of experience. The Panthers got pins from Heavilon (119) and Matt McCarty (140). Allen Poe received a forfeit at 285.
“Tullahoma beat us up pretty bad. They controlled the matches on the feet and on top with strong takedowns and good tilts and bar-arms. We will definitely be working in the practice room to make improvements on our aggressiveness on our feet, breakdowns on top, and hand control on bottom,” concluded Parker.
The Panthers travel to Rhea County on Tuesday to wrestle Rhea and Sequoyah with Wayne County and Cookeville coming to SMHS on Thursday. Sequoyah is one of Stone’s Region 3 A/AA foes.
