CCHS tames Sunbright Tigers Friday

The Cumberland County High School basketball teams received an early Christmas present, a sweep of the Sunbright High School teams Friday night in front of a small, home crowd.

The sweep began with a 54-30 victory by the Jet junior varsity over the Tigers, followed by a 61-51 win by the Lady Jets over the Lady Tigers and a 58-43 victory by the Jets.

CCHS JV 54, Sunbright JV 30: "This was a little better performance than last night (at Clarkrange), and it was good to see that after last night. Our defense was better and the offense clicked earlier in the tonight," said Coach Blaine Moore. "Sunbright made a little run at the beginning of the third quarter, but the boys survived it and had a really good fourth quarter — another good win for the boys (3-0)."

Tayler Houston paced the Jets with 18 points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist, while Drew Talford added 12 points and one rebound.

Donovan O'Rourke added nine markers, three boards, one steal and one assist, while Jake Masters chipped in six points, five caroms and two block shots, and Todd Threet added five points, six boards, two steals and two block shots.

CCHS JV 56, Clarkrange 40: "Afters a slow start, we finally started to play like I thought we should be playing. Defensively, we played well most of the night, but offensively, we just couldn't get anything going in the first quarter. The boys did a good job of maintaining their composure when Clarkrange made a run in the third quarter. This was a good win for the boys," added Moore.

Houston led the Jets with 13 points, three rebounds and two assists, and Spencer Scarbrough chipped in 13 markers with two rebounds, two assists. Donovan O'Rourke added 11 markers, five caroms, one steal and one assist.

Rounding out the scoring were Gary Frady with points, Jake Masters (three points, eight rebounds), Drew Talford (four points, one assist) and Todd Threet (eight markers, six rebounds, three steals and one assist).

Lady Jets 61, Sunbright 51: Jaclyn Reagan led the Lady Jets (9-2) with 18 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Taylor Vaden added 14 markers, six rebounds, four assists and two steals, and Emily Scrabrough had 15 markers, two caroms and one assist.

Jessika Dyer led the Lady Tigers with 20 markers.

The difference in this game was the team's free throw shooting. CCHS was 17 of 26 and Sunbright was five of eight, as the teams were almost identical from the floor — CCHS, 20 of 36, and Sunbright, 21 of 50.

Two layups by Vaden helped the Lady Jets build a 9-4 lead, but Dyer would score eight of her 20 points in the first quarter to help the visitors use a 12-7 run to tie the game at 16-16 by quarter's end.

CCHS was seven of 10 from the floor and one of two from the free throw line with two turnovers, while Sunbright was seven of 12 from the floor and one of two from the charity stripe with three turnnovers.

The Lady Jets built a 25-20 lead on three free throws by Scarbrough, but the Lady Tigers took a 28-27 advantage; however, Beth Ann Swafford's trey in the waning seconds gave CCHS a 30-28 lead.

CCHS was five of 10 from the floor and three of five from the charity stripe with two turnovers, while Sunbright was five of 12 from the field, including two of four from long range, with three turnovers.

Scarbrough, Reagan and Vaden combined for 14 points third-quarter points, as the Lady Jets outscored SHS 17-15 to take a 47-43 advantage. CCHS was seven of 13 from the floor and one of two from the charity stripe, while Sunbright was seven of 17 from the field and zero for one from the free throw line, but committed four turnovers.

The Lady Jets hit seven of eight free throws in a 9-0 fourth-quarter spurt to take a 56-43 lead with 2:13 remaining in the contest, but Sunbright would not quit, outscoring CCHS 8-5 to make the final score 61-51.

CCHS outscored the Lady Tigers 14-8 in the final stanza, thanks to 12 of 16 from the charity stripe and one of three from the field. Reagan was six of eight from the free throw line, while Jaime Rector had the only field goal.

CCHS (61): Scarbrough 15, Lane 4, Swafford 4, Green 0, Shinn 0, Vaden 14, Rector 6, Clark 0, VanWinkle 0, Reagan 18, Kerr 0.

Jets 58, Sunbright 43: Caleb Parsons tallied 21 points, four rebounds, one assist and two steals to lead the Jets (7-3) over the Tigers, while Derreck Hankins added 16 points, two rebounds, one assist and two steals. Terryl Bowen was the leading rebounder with 12.

Tyler Bunch led the Tigers with 12 points.

Parsons' six points helped the Jets build a 14-4 advantage, but the Tigers finished the quarter with a 4-2 run to slice the lead to 16-8 by quarter's end. CCHS was six of 13 from the field, while Sunbright was four of 12.

The Jets'  lead swelled to 27-15 late in the second quarter, but Sunbright finished the half with a 4-0 run to slice the lead to 27-19. CCHS' shooting cooled off to five of 14, while Sunbright was five of 11.

The Tigers would not go away, as they used a 10-4 third-quarter run to slice the Jets' lead to 31-29, but a layup by John Bilbrey helped the Jets to a 6-3 run for a 37-32 lead.

Sunbright finished the quarter with a 4-0 to slice the lead to 37-35 by quarter's end.

The visitors were seven of 14 from the floor, while CCHS was five of 12.

Cumberland County converted three of four three-point plays in the fourth quarter to spark at 19-8 run to seal the victory. Hankins had 10 of his 16 points in the final stanza, while Parsons had eight  of his 21.

The Jets were five of nine from the floor and 11 of 16 from the free throw line, while Sunbright was two of eight from the field and four of seven from the charity stripe.

Schedule: CCHS will be playing in the Union County Holiday Tournament in Maynardville, Dec. 28-30. They play South-Doyle on Monday; Grainger County on Tuesday; and Hancock County on Wednesday. Monday and Tuesday's games are slated for 3 and 4:30 p.m. CST, while Wednesday's contests begin at 9 a.m. CST.

CCHS will host SMHS on Tuesday, Jan. 5, at 6 p.m.
