SMHS wrestling team finished third in the Hixson Duals
The Stone Memorial Panther wrestling team participated in the Hixson Duals last Tuesday, placing third in the eight team tournament.
They were in a team pool with East Hamilton, Signal Mountain, and Sequoyah.
SMHS defeated East Hamilton (60-23), lost to Signal Mountain (18-57), and defeated Sequoyah (84-0). The 2-1 record in their pool placed SMHS in the consolation final with Rhea County, whom they defeated by a score of 51-26.
In the match against East Hamilton, the Panthers got pins from Trey Wright, Zach Heavilon, Andrew Faubert, John McCarty, John Adams, Jonathan Waldrup, and Kelsey Walker. Others winners were Rafael Soriano, Austin Brickle, and Allen Poe.
“The guys went out and took care of business during the match, but not so much in the second match versus Signal Mountain,” said Coach Brian Parker
Against Signal Mountain, the Panthers only received pins from Adams and Poe with a win for Soriano. They lost close matches at 119, 125, and 140.
“We put Heavilon up to 125 and Faubert at 119 in the hopes to win both, but ended up losing both in close matches. Signal Mountain is young like us but still proved to have a little more experience in several weight classes,” he added
Sequoyah gave up a lot of forfeits as a new team this year. The Panthers got pins from Faubert, Luke McCarty, Waldrup, and Poe.
The Panthers wrestled Rhea County in the consolation finals for third place. Rhea defeated SMHS a week earlier in a close match 36-40. The Panthers left no doubt this time around as they beat Rhea by a score of 51-26.
“We were a different team this time as some of the guys really stepped up. Sapp and Poe went from being pinned to getting pins which is a 24 point swing from last time. They really shined for us in this match,” Parker added.
The Panthers also got pins from Heavilon and Matt McCarty, a technical fall from Waldrup, and a major decision by Adams.
“I am very happy with our team effort today. With some more work in the practice room on technique and mental toughness, we may have a shot at the A-AA post season. We will see,” he concluded.
The Panthers will wrestle again on Thursday, Jan. 7, at CCHS against McMinn County and McMinn Central. McMinn Central is in the same A-AA region with SMHS.
The Zaxby’s Wrestlers of the Week is freshman Andrew Faubert for Dec. 14 and Allen Pole for Dec. 22.
Faubert posted pins against Sequoyah and Cookeville, while wrestling a tough match against a state-ranked Rhea County wrestler. He also had two pins in the Lookout Valley Tournament leading to a fifth place finish in the 125-pound weight class. “Andrew is really coming along as a young varsity wrestler. He is eager to do well and he is very coachable. He should have an exceptional freshman season,” said Coach Brian Parker.
Poe went 4-0 at the Hixson Duals helping the Panthers get third place. His wins included pins against Signal Mountain, Sequoyah, and Rhea County. The win against Rhea avenged an earlier loss to a tough wrestler.
“Allen has a lot of potential as a light heavyweight and he is showing improvement in his takedowns. We look forward to seeing what he can do in the coming weeks,” Parker concluded.
