Lady Panthers defeat Gibbs in Midway Holiday Tourney
Leslie Brown tossed in 29 points with five rebounds, two assists and one steal to lead the Stone Memorial Lady Panthers to a 55-52 win over the Gibbs Lady Eagles in the opening round of the Midway Holiday Classic at Midway High School on Saturday, Dec. 26.
"It was a good win for us. We did everything at the end of the game to win the game," said Coach Tim Smith, whose team improved to 7-5 overall, and played Pickett County in the tournament semi-finals Monday afternoon.
Kayla Daniell added nine points with two boards.
Taylor Mills led Gibbs with 24 points.
The first quarter showcased Brown and Mills.
Brown scored 11 of the Lady Panthers' 16 first quarter points, including six of 10 from the charity stripe, while Mills had all nine of the Lady Eagles' markers.
SMHS trailed 5-4 in the early going, but a layup by Brown helped her team build a 16-7 advantage. Mills converted a layup in the waning seconds to make the score 16-9.
A jumper by Daniell gave the Lady Panthers a 20-13 advantage midway in the second quarter, but two free throws by Kayla Bird keyed a 14-5 run to take a 27-25 lead on a trey by Mills.
SMHS took a 30-27 lead with 1.40 left in the half, but Gibbs finished the quarter with a 4-0 run to take a 31-30 advantage.
Brown scored nine third-quarter points, as the Lady Panthers outscored Gibbs 13-12 for a 44-43 advantage.
Ashley Cox's three-point play with 5:22 left in the game gave SMHS a 51-44 advantage, but the Lady Eagles clawed their way back to slice the lead to 52-49 with 4:01 left in the game.
Coach Tim Smith went to his patient offense to salt away the game.
Brooke Foster converted the first of two free throws with 1:34 left to give SMHS a 53-49 advantage; however, Mills banked in another trey to slice the lead to 53-52 with 1:15 remaining.
Cox buried two free throws with 30.6 seconds to give SMHS a 55-52 lead.
Mills missed a tying trey as time ticked off the clock; however, SMHS used their remaining fouls to stop the clock.
Mills missed two free throws with 1.3 seconds left, with SMHS getting the rebound to claim the victory.

Gibbs (52): Wallen 0, Byrd 6, Wilson 3, Mills 24, Moyers 3, Whited 6, Massy 4, Day 7, Bunch 0.
Super 16 Tournament: The Stone Memorial Panthers were defeated 89-51 in the opening round of the Super 16 Tournament Saturday night at Bearden High School.
The Panthers played the loser of the Fulton-West game Monday evening. The tournament concludes Tuesday evening.
Schedule: SMHS will visit CCHS on Tuesday, Jan. 5, and will return for back-to-back District 4AA games with Alcoa (Jan. 8) and Kingston (Jan. 12). The Lady Panther junior varsity is in action against Kingston on Jan. 12.
