SMHS hoop teams continue holiday play
The Stone Memorial basketball teams continued their holiday tournament play Monday.
The Lady Panthers were defeated 38-35 by Pickett County in the semi-finals of the Midway Holiday Tournament at Midway High School, while the Panthers lost to Knox Fulton 78-73 in the loser's bracket of the Super 16 Tournament at Bearden High School.
Pickett County 38, SMHS 35: "We played good defensively, but couldn't shoot the ball. We shot 13 of 47 from the field," said Lady Panther Coach Tim Smith, whose team falls to 7-6 overall.
Leslie Brown led SMHS with 12 points, while Julia Webb added 11 points and Brooke Foster chipped in five markers. The other seven points were spread out among the other players, but starters Kelli Keck, Erin Keyes and Kayla Daniell failed to score.
The Lady Panthers played Midway for third place Tuesday afternoon, and will travel to CCHS on Tuesday, Jan. 5, for a 6 p.m. contest, before hosting Alcoa on Friday, Jan. 8, in a District 4AA match.
Knox Fulton 78, SMHS 73: Dustin Melton tallied 22 points, while Brandon Cole and Zack Sherrill added 16 and 13 markers, respectively, as the Panthers fell to the Falcons. Rounding out the scoring were Brock Rowan (5), Robert Troino (5) and Alex Kiser (4).
Melton had six three-point baskets, while Rowan had one.
According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, Stone took a 16-12 first-quarter lead, but the Falcons outscored the Panthers 24-19 in the second quarter for a 36-35 lead at the break. Fulton outscored SMHS 42-38 in the second half to take the victory.
The Panthers played Grace Tuesday afternoon.
SMHS will travel to CCHS on Tuesday, Jan. 5, for a 7:30 p.m. contest, followed by a home game on Friday, Jan. 8, against Alcoa.
