Karate students bring home the gold in tourneys

CROSSVILLE — On March 24, Ben Gibson, second degree black belt from Art Palmers School of Isshinryu, traveled to Somerset, KY,  to compete in the Somer-Slam Karate tournament. This was one of the largest tournaments in the state that attracked more than 500 competitors from all over the country! There were many different styles that came to showcase their talents. Gibson was the only competitor from the Isshinryu style and the state of Tennessee. He competed in several grappling matches where he placed second in the begginers divison and third in the advanced divison.

During the Karate competition, Gibson took second in fighting, first in kata and first with weapons. He went on to be overall grand champion of kata and weapons.

Gibson competed against many black belts from all over the country and returned home with five medals and two trophies.

He was also offered to join Master Jim Wilson's team of Kentucky to travel to Italy and compete in the World Karate Games.

Gibson stated, "This was a huge honor and something to really think about."

He also wanted to thank Master Art Palmer, Tim  Sherrill, Marty Robbins and Charlie Threet for their training in preparing him for this competition.
