CROSSVILLE —
Bryan College in Dayton, TN, is getting another former Jet basketball player for the 2011-'12 school year.
Derrek Hankins, a 2011 CCHS grad, signed a scholarship with the NAIA school on June 1, and will join 2010 graduate Caleb Parsons for the upcoming season.
"This will be Derrek's second season starting and he has become more and more of a leader on this team. Everyone knows Derrek competes hard on the court is showing in his senior year," said Coach Will Foster in the 2010-'11 Winter Sports Preview. "I expect great things again from Derrek this year and I know that he will not disappoint."
Hankins had an outstanding senior year, as he won the Lions Club "Shoot for Sight" Award with 42 treys during the campaign, was the team's Best Offensive Player. He earned All-District 6AAA honors and hit 76 percent from the free throw line.
As a junior, he was the Jets' Offensive Player of the Year and was All-Region 3AAA, as led the Jets to their first district championship in 26 years. CCHS was 20-9 overall and 4-4 in the district that season.
He also won the Lions Club "Shoot for Sight" Award and shared Best Offensive Player honors with Caleb Parsons.
As a sophomore under former Coach Scott Eggleston, he won the free throw league competiton with a 17-6 record. He totaled 149 points, 22 assists, 30 rebounds and four steals, and was 51 of 133 for 38.3 percent from the field, including 29 of 89 from three point range, and 18 of 28 from the free throw line (64.3 percent).
"Derrek is an excellent shooter that had a very good freshman and junior varsity season, and has a chance to give us some depth on the perimeter. He has worked extremely hard on his defense to become a complete player," said Eggleston prior to the start of the 2008-'09 season.
Hankins was part of the 2007-'08 freshman team which finished 11-5.
He is the son of Gary and Annette Hankins. His sister, Whitney, is a member of the Lady Jet basketball and softball teams.
He has a younger brother, Conner.

Another Stone Memorial basketball player will be calling Bryan College home for the 2012-'13 school year, as senior Brandon Cole signed scholarship players to play for the Lions and join his former Panther teammate Robert Troino at the Dayton school.

Jet soccer team honored for great season
The Cumberland County High School Jet soccer team was recognized May 22 at their annual banquet, after finishing third in the district and posting a school-record 11 wins. The team finished with an 11-7-1 record, after losing 4-3 to Coffee County in the district tournament.

Tryouts for the 2012 Cumberland County High School Lady Jet volleyball team will be May 30-June 1 from noon to 2 p.m. in the CCHS gym.

Taylor, Green co-champs of Tennessee Senior State Open
Professional Harry Taylor and amateur Danny Green were declared co-champions of the third annual Tennessee Senior State Open presented by the City of Crossville May 21-22 at Stonehenge Golf Club. The 36-hole tournament was shortened to 18, as the second round was canceled due to unplayable course conditions, according to the TPGA.

Cumberland County High School didn't have go far to find a wrestling coach for 2012-'13, as former assistant and Phoenix School teacher Wes McNeely will replace retiring coach James Brady.
