Burgin wins TPGA section golf title
Head Professional Kelvin Burgin, a Crossville native, from the Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain started the third and final round two shots back of the second round leader Steve Munson (Chuckey - Graysburg Hills) and posted a three-under par round of 68 to claim his third straight title TPGA Section championship by three stroke over Munson, according to the Tennessee Golf Association.
"I hit the ball well. I putted real well and managed the course well," said Burgin Friday morning. "Hopefully, a third time in Memphis will be a charm."
The pair of PGA professionals shared the leaderboard for most of the day, but Burgin's birdie from the trees on #16 gave him a three-shot lead where he pared the two remaining holes.
Burgin took home the first-place check of $6,500 and also earned a spot in the 2009 Stanford St. Jude Championship (PGA Tour).
Burgin joins Gibby Gilbert (Hixson) and Bert Weaver as the only other two Tennessee Section PGA Professionals to successfully defend their title two consecutive years.
Lonesome Pine's Chris Stacy fought his way to the leaderboard with a four-under par round of 67 to finish in a tie for third place with Keith Burdette (Chattanooga - Bear Trace at Harrions Bay) and fellow state employee Mark Houser (Kingsport - TN Golf Trail at Warriors Path).
Also, Greg Wyatt of Golf Capital Learning Center tied for 19th with four others at five-over par 218 to earn $575, while Crossville professional and former Big Break champion Kip Henley, who also caddies for PGA pro Brian Gay, tied for 24th place with two others at six-over par 219 and earned $475.
In all, 60 PGA Professionals competed in the Championship which was hosted by the 6,600 yard par 71 Old Hickory Country Club. Tennessee PGA professionals came as far as Olive Branch, MS and Big Stone Gap, VA to compete in the 40th Annual Championship of the Tennessee Section, an affiliate of the PGA of America.
