CCHS Jets coach looking on the bright side of 21-7 loss
"We continue to fight. Penalties hurt us, but we continue to improve. They really wanted to win. I wanted to win," said CCHS Coach Tony Shultz, after his team dropped a 21-7 decision to the York Institute Dragons Friday night on Holder Field.
"The defensive line — Cody Suggs, Brad Davis, Eric Davis, Andrew Phipps and Eric Fitzgerald — played above their talent level," he added.
The Dragons scored on their first possession, as Lance Wright scored on a two-yard run and Tyrel Asberry booted the PAT. The score was set up by a 63-yard pass from Tyler Stephens to Micah Norman.
Things would even out afterwards.
The Jets had three possessions in the first quarter, picking up 39 yards rushing on 10 carries and completing one of two passes for 11 yards, while holding the Dragons to 19 yards rushing on eight carries and 72 yards on two of three passes, with 63 yards coming on the long pass.
Leading the Jets' defense were Frank Pursell, Shane McGonagle, Shawn Scott, Cody Smith and Zaq Pearson, along with the defensive line.
The Jets would tie the game on the last possession of the half, driving 34 yards on five plays, with Cody Vance scoring on an eight-run and Ethan Spitler booting the PAT to tie the score.
The Jets' defense led by McGonagle, Smith, Fitzgerald, Scott, Pursell and Pearson would hold the Dragons to 32 yards rushing on 11 carries, while the offense picked up 38 yards rushing on eight carries and 33 yards passing on four of seven passes.
David Qualls caught three of the passes for 27 yards, while Vance rushed for 21 yards on four carries.
The Jets' first possession of the second half was stopped by a fumble at the Jets 21-yard line. Two plays later, Brian VanWormer scored from 18 yards out to give the Dragons a 13-7 lead, but the PAT was no good.
CCHS would have two more possessions, but couldn't crack the scoreboard, while the defense would hold York to 39 yards rushing and 16 yards passing in the third quarter.
York's last possession of the third quarter continued into the fourth period. CCHS had the Dragons stopped, but a 15-yard penalty gave the visitors a first down to continue the series.
The Jets' defense put the Dragons in a fourth and six situation, but an offsides call gave the Dragons a fourth and one at the four-yard line. Wright would race into the end zone for a 19-7 lead. York converted the two-point conversion for a 21-7 advantage.
Qualls returned the ensuing kick 26 yards to the Jet 36-yard line. The Jets moved the ball into Dragon territory, but a half back pass by Pearson was incomplete, giving the ball back to the Dragons.
York moved the ball into Jet territory, with the defense stopping the march at the four-yard line.
Time ran out before the Jets could get a march going.
Vance led CCHS with 71 yards rushing on 10 carries, while Bowen completed five of 10 passes for 46 yards. Qualls had three catches for 27 yards and one kick return for 26 yards.
The Jets (1-5, 0-3) close out the home season against the Coffee County Central Red Raiders (1-6, 0-3) Friday at 7 p.m. Former CCHS assistant coach/teacher Eddie Nunley is the head coach for the Red Raiders.
