Cumberland County elementary basketball update

The Cumberland County elementary varsity basketball season opened Nov. 24 with three doubleheaders — Crab Orchard at Homestead, South at Martin and Brown at Pleasant Hill, with the North at Stone postponed and reset for Jan. 5; however, last night's (Dec. 1) games were postponed, as school was dismissed for the snowy weather.

These games — Brown at South, Pleasant Hill at Martin, Crab Orchard at North and Homestead at Stone — must be rescheduled, as the county tournament is set Jan. 17, 19, 20, 23 and 24, utilizing both high school gyms.

Crab Orchard at Homestead

Homestead 38, Crab Orchard 16: Casey Swafford tallied 12 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs over the Lady Tigers. Rounding out the scoring were Jackie Livesay (6), Whitney Hankins (6), Emily Bryant (2), Meghan Server (8), Mary DeMetro (2) and T. Cokkinias (2).

Amanda Walker led Crab Orchard with six points. Rounding out the scoring were Destiny Carlton (4), Meghan Hayes (4) and Kirsten Potter (2).

South at Martin

South 37, Martin 35: Caylin Griswold tallied 20 points to lead the South Lady Rebels with 20 points, followed by Ivy Shinn (7), Gina Dick (5), Makenzie Iles (3) and Bailey Richardson (2).

Brianna Vallecillo led Martin with 20 markers, followed by Livia Jo Abston (4), Danielle Newsome (8), Ally Scruggs (2) and Brandi Kinder (1).

South 38, Martin 31: Spencer Scarbrough poured in 16 markers to lead the South Rebels over the Martin Eagles. Gage Spence, Brandon Walton and Aaron Jones each had five points, followed by Dorian Holt (4), Diego Poore (2) and Tylin Miller (1).

"The guys played an overall good game, but tonight that wasn't enough. Costly turnovers in the first half and continually putting them at the late in the second half was too much for us to overcome. Coach Randy Herring did a good job of preparing his team for tonight. They did what they had to win tonight," said Martin Coach Blaine Moore.

Sam Williams led Martin with 12 points, followed by Gary Frady (10), Austin Radford (4), Jonathan Elmore (2) and Brian Young (3).

Brown at Pleasant Hill

Brown 39, Pleasant Hill 37: Ashley Davis tickled the twine for 21 points to lead the Brown Lady Bears over the Pleasant Hill Lady Hornets. Rounding out the scoring were Ashley Music (7), Ashley Bolin (7), Alexis Carter (2) and Sharon Ulloa (2).

Savannah Sheets led Pleasant Hill with 24 points, followed by Lacey Turner (11) and Brianna Hawkins-Clark (2).

Pleasant Hill 34, Brown 19: Cameron O'Rourke tallied 16 points to lead the Hornets over the Bears. Rounding out the scoring were Calvin Richards (8), J. J. Miller (5), Trey McCloud (3) and Tyler McCormick (2).

The leading scorers for Brown were Jon Wyatt (5), Roger Gentry (4), Brandon Davis (4), Hunter Brown (2), Austin Stokes (2), Nick Carter (1) and Bradley Burgess (1).
