CCHS tied for third place in District 5AAA

The Cumberland County High School Jet baseball team fell to 2-2 in District 5AAA, after dropping a pair of games to the McMinn County Cherokees to tie to Bradley Central for third place in the district.

Bradley Central (2-2) split their two district games with Rhea County (1-3), while Walker Valley (3-1) defeated Cleveland (1-3) 12-6 Monday and 9-6 on Wednesday.

CCHS lost 5-2 at Athens on Monday, and then were beaten 8-5 Tuesday at Jet Park.

Cole ripped a two-out double in the sixth, but was left stranded at third.

McMinn County scored five times in the bottom of the sixth inning on a walk, singles by Braxton Smith and Travis Smith, a failed bunt attempt and a double by Cody Hiefner for the 5-1 lead.

Back-to-back doubles by Braxton Smith and Logan South cut the lead to 5-2, bringing Jones in from shortstop to put out the fire. Jones allowed two walks, singles by Drew Massingale, Pippin and Andrew Smith, which produced four more runs to give the visitors a 6-5 lead.

McMinn County scored one more run in the fourth on a single by Case Roberts, a double by Comerford and a fielder's choice for a 7-5.

They added an insurance run in the fifth on a hitbatsman, a walk, a wild pitch and a RBI single by Pippin.

Jones allowed two singles and a walk in the sixth and a single in the seventh.

Davenport singled and stole second in the second, but was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a single by Jones.
