CCHS tied for third place in District 5AAA
The Cumberland County High School Jet baseball team fell to 2-2 in District 5AAA, after dropping a pair of games to the McMinn County Cherokees to tie to Bradley Central for third place in the district.
Bradley Central (2-2) split their two district games with Rhea County (1-3), while Walker Valley (3-1) defeated Cleveland (1-3) 12-6 Monday and 9-6 on Wednesday.
CCHS lost 5-2 at Athens on Monday, and then were beaten 8-5 Tuesday at Jet Park.
McMinn County 5, CCHS 2: John Bilbrey was the losing pitcher, allowing five runs on four hits with four strikeouts and went one for three from the plate.
Brandon Cole was two for three with an RBI, while Bo Davis, Bryan Woodlief and Cole VanHorn were each one for three.
According to the Daily Post Athenian, Bilbrey opened the Jet fourth with his team's first hit and advanced to third, when the ball took a bad hop in right field. Bilbrey scored on Cole's single.
Cole ripped a two-out double in the sixth, but was left stranded at third.
McMinn County scored five times in the bottom of the sixth inning on a walk, singles by Braxton Smith and Travis Smith, a failed bunt attempt and a double by Cody Hiefner for the 5-1 lead.
The Jets scored one run in the top of the seventh inning on three hits.
McMinn County 8, CCHS 5: The Cherokees scored seven unanswered runs to take the 8-5 victory over Tuesday night.
The visitors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a single by Matt Pippin, a stolen base, a wild pitch and Heath Comerford's sacrifice fly.
Coach Dave Prichard's squad wasted no time jumping on Cherokee starter Adam Roberts, scoring five runs on a walk, three errors, singles by Cody Davenport and Bo Davis, a two-run double by Matt Jones and an RBI double by Bryan Woodlief. Davis drove in the other run with his single.
Back-to-back doubles by Braxton Smith and Logan South cut the lead to 5-2, bringing Jones in from shortstop to put out the fire. Jones allowed two walks, singles by Drew Massingale, Pippin and Andrew Smith, which produced four more runs to give the visitors a 6-5 lead.
McMinn County scored one more run in the fourth on a single by Case Roberts, a double by Comerford and a fielder's choice for a 7-5.
They added an insurance run in the fifth on a hitbatsman, a walk, a wild pitch and a RBI single by Pippin.
Jones allowed two singles and a walk in the sixth and a single in the seventh.
Davenport singled and stole second in the second, but was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a single by Jones.
Davis singled in the third, but the Jets loaded the bases in the fifth on a single by Brad Wyatt, two walks and a fielder's choice.
Bilbrey singled in the sixth, but was erased in a double play to end the inning.
With one out in the seventh, Jones and Davis both singled, chasing Roberts from the hill. Massengale hit Woodlief with two outs, but struck-out pinch hitter Bryan Srock to end the game.
Jones and Davis each had three hits for the Jets, while Davenport had two. Wyatt, Woodlief and Bilbrey had one apiece.
Scott allowed three runs on three hits with two strikeouts in one-plus inning, while Jones allowed five runs on nine hits with five walks and five Ks.
CCHS traveled to York Institute Thursday, followed by road games to Cookeville Friday, Lenoir City Saturday and to Walker Valley on Monday, before hosting Walker Valley on April 7.
