Close games lately have been the norm for Coach Will Foster's Jet basketball team and last Thursday night's Sun Drop Tournament opener at DeKalb County High School was no exception, as CCHS dropped a 77-75 decision to the Tigers, sending the Jets into the consolation bracket round at Warren County High School Friday and Saturday.
Junior Logan Parsons was on fire for CCHS, as he pumped in a season-high 36 points on seven of seven from two-point range, seven of 12 from three point range and one of two from the charity stripe, along with six rebounds and one steal.
Senior Dylan Qualls added 19 points with six rebounds, two assists and one steal. Rounding out the Jets statistics were Diego Poore (two rebounds, four assists, one steal), J.J. Miller (four points, one rebound, one steal), Austin Brown (two points, one rebound, one steal), Alex Dixon, Tayler Houston (eight points, one rebound, two assists, one steal), Cade Smith (six points, three rebounds, one steal) and Cameron O'Rourke (two rebounds, one assist and one steal).
Braxton Atnip led the Tigers with 25 points, while Ethan Roller, Justin Bone and Sonnie Fullilove chipped in 15, 14 and 14 markers, respectively.
Before a small crowd in the Tiger den, the Jets, behind Parsons' 12 points, came out on fire, jumping out to a 14-4 lead midway in the first quarter, but Fullilove scored eight points in a row for the hosts to finish the quarter with a 10-4 run to slice the Jets' lead to 18-14 by quarter's end.
Both teams were hotter than firecrackers, as CCHS was eight of 16 from the floor with five turnovers and DeKalb County was seven of eight with nine turnovers, which led to several Jet points.
A trey by Smith put CCHS ahead 21-14, but the Tigers roared back with a 12-0 run for a 26-21 lead. Parsons' third trey rallied the Jets with a 20-8 explosion to take a 41-34 lead at the break.
Parsons and Qualls each had nine points in the quarter for the Jets, who were eight of 14 from the field with four turnovers, while the Tigers were nine of 17 with four miscues.
CCHS torrid shooting continued into the third quarter, as they flew out to a 53-43 advantage with 4:26 remaining; however, a trey by Will Molanders triggered a 14-9 run slicing the Jet lead to 62-57 by quarter's end.
Parsons and Houston each had six points for the Jets, who were eight of 12 from the field and four of six from the charity stripe with four turnovers, while the Tigers were nine of 15 from the floor and two for two from the free throw line with five turnovers.
Bone scored 12 points in an 18-7 run to give the Tigers a 75-69 lead with 2:45 left in the contest. Parsons buried another trey to slice the lead to 75-72.
After Atnip hit two free throws to give the Tigers a 77-72 lead, Parsons buried another trey to slice the margin to 77-75 with 39.1 ticks remaining.
Atnip missed the front end of a one-plus-one with 15.1 left, giving the Jets time to set up their offense for a tying or winning short. Parsons missed a trey with 3.5 seconds remaining, with Dekalb County taking over with 1.9 seconds left to seal the victory.
The Jets were playing in the consolation round at presstime Friday afternoon and again on Saturday morning, before taking a couple of day offs for Christmas and their trip to LaFayette Dec. 27-29.

Ward’s hole-in-one is highlight of Exchange Club Golf Tournament
After being rained out in April, the Lake Tansi Exchange Club Golf Tournament was played June 15 at the Tansi Golf Course, but the highlight of the tournament was a hole-in-one by Kay Ward of Murfreesboro. She recorded an ace on the par 3, third hole to win a new car from Dave Kirk Automotive.

The Cumberland County High School Cheerleaders are “UCA Camp Champs”! The CCHS varsity and junior varsity squads enjoyed a week packed full of fun and excitement at UCA Cheer Camp at Tennessee Technological University June 4-7 with 25 other cheer squads.

More than 50 compete in Avalon Center 5K June 8
The Avalon Center held its first 5K run and 1 mile walk on Saturday, June 8, at Stone Memorial High School. It was a beautiful day and more 50 participants came out to enjoy the low humidity to get in their daily run and help out a worthy organization.

Mike Steinmann/Salvation Army Golf Tournament set July 27
The sixth Mike Steinmann/Salvation Army Golf Tournament is set Saturday, July 27 at the Lake Tansi Golf Course. The tournament will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Entry fee is $65 per person which includes a fish fry afterward along with some great prizes. There will be a hole-in-one contest on the par 3 third hole for a cash prize of $15,000, along with hole-in-one prizes on the other par 3 holes.

State women’s open field continues to grow
The field for the 15th Golf Capital of Tennessee Women's Open is half way to the century mark (100). The entry deadline is 5 p.m. July 3 for the July 18-20 tournament hosted by the city of Crossville at Fairfield Glade's Stonehenge Golf Club.
