George H. Ellenberg, 86, of Crossville, passed away Oct. 7, 2012, at home. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m. at Bilbrey Funeral Home. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
He was born in Union City, NJ, Nov. 23, 1925. He served in the U.S. Navy Armed Guard when he was 18 as a gunners' mate and fought in World War II overseas for two years. After his service, he worked for Public Service Electric and Gas Co. for 40 years and retired to Crossville with his wife, Carol. George was a loving husband and father.
He was VFW commander in River Edge, NJ, for many years.
George was a volunteer firefighter at Fairfield Glade for about six years. He was also treasurer for three years at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church and worked as a starter at Dorchester Golf Course and Deer Creek. After his heart surgery, he joined the Cardiac Pulmonary Rehab Alumni, Inc. and ran the annual golf tournament for four years. He was also the recipient of the Dimpled Globe Award as "Retiree of the Year" in 2009. He enjoyed traveling and golfing with buddies.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; two sons, Richard and George Ellenberg; two daughters, Ruthanne Ellenberg Ragel and Laura Simon; and five grandchildren, George H. Ellenberg, Whitney Ellenberg, Taylor Ragel, Christopher Tappen and Paige Simon. Also survived by two brothers-in-law, Robert Lien and Greg Rottengen; and two sisters-in-law, Donna Rottengen and Marge Ellenberg.
He was preceded in death by his father, George Ellenberg; mother, Ruth Ellenberg; and brother, Edward Ellenberg.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Cardia Pulmonary Rehab Alumni, Inc., P.O. Box 14, Crossville, TN 38557-0014.
