CROSSVILLE —
Alma Merritt passed away peacefully in her sleep April 22, 2012, at the age of 98. Visitation will be held at Homestead Baptist Saturday, May 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the funeral service to follow at 1 p.m. Burial will be in the Campground Cemetery in Clarkrange.
She was born and raised in Clarkrange, TN. She was the oldest daughter of Donzie (Neely) and John Ashburn, and was preceded in death by her four sisters, Willie Mae, Delsie, Mima and Flossie.
Alma taught school in the early 1930s, first in a one-room schoolhouse in Campground, and then at the elementary school in Clarkrange. Years were spent in Ohio, where she met the love of her life, back again in Tennessee, and then in California, but those years have finally brought her home. She will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband of 38 years, Elvin, in the Campground Cemetery near Clarkrange.
Alma is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Lyn Monds of California. She was a grandmother to Linda Harris, Theresa Kasner, Anita Cruse, Charla Monds and Kevin Monds, as well as a great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.
Mom, grandma, great-grandma, she held many pieces of her family’s lives. She held all the stories they so loved to hear. Her loss brings them great sadness, but also solace when they realize the long, well-lived life she had here on Earth. They will keep her stories now so that Alma may rest peacefully.
Crossville Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.
