Johnnie R. Dyer

Jan. 28, 1923 — Sept. 27, 2006

Johnnie Ruth Dyer, 83, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 27, 2006. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 1 at Crossville First Baptist Church. Bro. Dave Wilkerson officiated with burial in Crossville City Cemetery. Special music was provided by the church choir, Mike Garrett and Ed Cagle.

Mrs. Dyer was born Jan. 28, 1923 in Fabius, AL, the daughter of Thomas Riley and Lavesta E. Buckner Hawes.

She was retired from Carter's Ink and was a member of First Baptist Church in Crossville. She was also a retired Pink Lady at Cumberland Medical Center, a member of the Eastern Star and also sang in the Happy Hearts Choir at First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, J.L. and Shirley Dyer of Dalton, GA and Bob and Patty Dyer of Crossville; daughter, Mary Beth Wilson of Crossville; brother, Lawrence Hawes of Leighton, AL; sister, Janice Houston of Elyria, OH; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Miller L. Dyer; son, Gregory Donald Dyer; sisters, Marie Brunasky, Evilee Bailey and Ester Webb; and brother, Carl Hawes.

Her grandsons served as pallbearers.

Philip J. Guthrie

Jan. 20, 1923 — Sept. 28, 2006

Philip Junior Guthrie, 83, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Sept. 28, 2006. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Christ Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Jerry Weeks and the Rev. Robert Hartenfeld officiating.

Mr. Guthrie was born Jan. 20, 1923, in Belleview, OH, the son of Philip Henry Guthrie and Lola Mae (Farnsworth) Guthrie.

He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II in the South Pacific where he was wounded. He was a retired school bus driver and owner of Phil's Bicycle Shop in the Toledo, OH area. He was also a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Fairfield Glade.

Survivors include his wife, Betty (Brinkman) Guthrie of Fairfield Glade; daughters, Kay Ann Neeb of Fairfield Glade and Nancy Jo Guthrie of Slidell, LA; son, Philip Lynn Guthrie of Farmington Hills, MI; sisters, Betty Diekman of Walridge, OH and Norma Jean Cislo of Maumee, OH; grandchildren, Meggin, Nicholas, Cassie Guthrie, Grant and Matthew Wortman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Steven Guthrie.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Christ Lutheran Church Choir Fund, 481 Snead Dr., Fairfield Glade, TN 38558, or the Alzheimer's Association, 2200 Sutherland Ave., Ste. H102, Knoxville, TN 37919-9921.

Omer C. Lawson

April 9, 1913 — Sept. 25, 2006

Bishop Omer C. Lawson, 93, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 25, 2006. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 28 at Pine Grove Church of God of Prophecy. Bro. Todd McDonald, Bro. Adrian Varlack Jr., Bro. Ray Wynn and Bro. Tim Farmer officiated, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens.

Mr. Lawson was born April 9, 1913 in Cumberland County, the son of Dan and Carrie Willis Lawson.

He was a retired bishop and attended Lawrence Chapel Church of God of Prophecy. Throughout his life, his faith and devotion to his family and the church never grew weak. He brought the love and teachings of our Lord to many souls as he pastored churches in Tennessee and Illinois for 23 years. He also served as state overseer. He spent 17 years in Wisconsin, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Michigan while pastoring some churches in those states.

He also worked as a carpenter and built churches in several states, also working on bridge construction in Pennsylvania.

Survivors include his wife, Connie Lawson; sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn and Inez Lawson of Dalton, GA, Melvin and Retha Lawson of Shererville, IN, James and Brenda Lawson of Dyersburg, TN and Philip and Ernestine Lawson of Columbia, TN; daughters and sons-in-law, Loretta and William Mansfield of Michie, TN, Willean and Charles Smith of Sauk Village, IL and Linda Aiken of Crossville; sister, Ruth Lawson of Crossville; 24 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wife, Myrtle Leona Tabor Lawson; brothers, Sam, Raymond, Jim, L.A. and Clearence Lawson; sister, Della Parrott; granddaughter, Dawn Aiken; and son-in-law, Bobby Horner.

Pallbearers were Jeffery Aiken, Richie Horner, Tony Lawson, Glenn Lawson Jr., Melvin Lawson Jr. and Ronnie Horner.

John E. Ruggiero

Oct. 1, 2006

John Edward Ruggiero, 71, of Seymour, TN, passed away Oct. 1, 2006. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. EDT at the Seymour Kingdom Hall of Jehova's Witnesses.

Mr. Ruggiero will be remembered for his sense of humor and quick wit. He never met a stranger, greeting them with, "Where's Louis?" or "Hurry up!" He was one of the original salesmen for Fairfield Glade and worked there for over 20 years.

He was a member of Seymour Kingdom Hall of Jehova's Witnesses.

Survivors include his wife, Tamara Ruggiero; children, Robin Phillips, Spencer Ruggiero, Mickey Ruggiero, Gia Ruggiero, Tabitha Ruggiero and Gabrielle Ruggiero; grandchildren, Johnathan Ruggiero, Marcus Ruggiero, Katy Ruggiero, Spencer Hutchings, Macy Ruggiero, Jordan Sloan, Teddi Robinson and Grayson Robinson; sisters, Annie Magnifico, Missy Pegliaro, Lorainne Formont and Mary Williams; and brother, Billy Ruggiero.

Sheila L. Smith

Jan. 30, 1966 — Sept. 27, 2006

Sheila Laverne Smith, 40, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 27, 2006. Funeral services were conducted Sept. 30, from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home. Bro. Steve Taylor officiated, with burial in Linary Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith was born Jan. 30, 1966 in Rockwood, TN, the daughter of Roger D. and Evelyn Marie Hinch Patton of Grandview.

She was employed as a sales clerk and was a member of Reed's Chapel Church of God. She had many hobbies and interests, some of which were bowling, puzzle books, reading and cross stitching. She was also an avid sports fan. She was a loving, caring and devoted mother, daughter, sister and friend. She brought joy, laughter and love to everyone that was blessed to have known her and she will be greatly missed by all.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandparents, Bertie and Ava Lee Hinch of Grandview; son, Stephen Dale Smith of Grandview; daughters, Mary Lynn Smith and Judy Marie Smith of Crossville; brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Tonia Patton of Crossville; sisters, Rhonda Sue Hodge and husband Daniel W. Hodge of Crossville, Karen Patton and Trent McCoy of Crossville and Sherry Henson and Edward Ramsey of Whitwell, TN; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. She also leaves many wonderful friends at Cumberland Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Lester and Alene Patton; aunt, Judy Patton; niece, Amanda Gail McCoy; cousins, Jerry Layne Jr. and Diamond "Matt" Armstrong; and special friend, Rodney Burnett.

Pallbearers were Gary Patton, Charles Patton, Ricky Patton, Noble Patton, Kyle Hinch and Travis Hinch.
