Vincent C. Crawford
June 2, 1910 — Feb. 16, 2007
Vincent C. Crawford, 96, formerly of Millerton, NY, passed away Feb. 16, 2007 in Crossville. A funeral Mass was held Feb. 20 at St. Patrick Church in Millerton, with Father John Durkin officiating. Interment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery in the spring.
Mr. Crawford was born June 2, 1910, in Fishkill, the son of William and Margaret (Conway) Crawford.
A 92-year resident of Millerton, in 2002 he moved to Tennessee to be with his son Bill and daughter-in-law Nancy.
On July 3, 1928, he married the former Anna Sheehan, his wife for 65 years. She passed away in 1993.
He had been employed by Suburban Propane for 36 years and retired in 1973. He was a member of St. Patrick Church in Millerton. A well-known athlete throughout Dutchess County, he was a member of the county baseball and basketball hall of fame. He had played with such greats as Wes Westrum (former Giants catcher and manager of the New York Mets and the San Francisco Giants), Hank Sauer (Chicago Cubs) and Chuck Connors who played for the Brooklyn Dodgers (also known as "The Rifleman" in the TV series).
While he served in the U.S. Army at West Point, he was instrumental in getting Westrum and Connors to play basketball in this area. In 1928, he played for the Boston Red Sox farm team in Danville, VA, and until his passing was an avid Red Sox (and Atlanta Braves) fan.
Well into middle age and playing along with several local softball teams, he hit a foul ball the proverbial "country mile," taking out the windshield of a supposedly safely-parked fan's car. His comment was, "I'm sorry about Clark's window, but it feels good to be able to still hit. I think it's all in my wrists."
In addition to his son William and daughter-in-law Nancy, he is survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 12 siblings.
Those who so desire may contribute, in his memory, to the Millerton Fire Department, Millerton, NY 12546.
