Nathan C. Barnes

Nathan C. Barnes, 54, of Crossville, passed away April 17, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, from the chapel of Evans Mortuary of Rockwood, with the Rev. James Allen officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. Barnes was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Randy Norris; nieces, Brandi Kirkland and Ashley Estey and husband David; nephew, Lee Norris; and great-nieces, Kenz Kirkland, Maddy Kirkland and Allana Estey, all of Crossville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd E. and Dorothy Juanita Barnes; and daughter, Tammy Barnes.

Pallbearers were Randy Norris, David Estey, Cody Rector, Matthew Parris, Johny Dayton and Marty King.

Elwood C. Fairgrief

Jan. 12, 1932 — April 17, 2007

Elwood C. "Ted" Fairgrief, 75, of Fairfield Glade, passed away April 17, 2007. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Max Mayo and the Rev. Lanita Pride officiating. Burial will be in the church Memory Garden.

Mr. Fairgrief was born Jan. 12, 1932, in Dennison, IL, the son of Ralph and Veda Rollings Fairgrief.

He was a retired agent with Standard Oil Company and a member of Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church. He enjoyed woodworking and loved to fish. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was known for his great storytelling.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Fairgrief of Fairfield Glade; son and daughter-in-law, Curtis Lee and Lynn Fairgrief of Lafayette, IN; daughter and son-in-law, Sheryl Lynn and Steven Hayward of McMinnville; sisters, Mary Colliflower of Terre Haute, IN and Karen Graham of West Terre Haute, IN; grandchildren, Brooklynn Cleefman and husband Christopher, Holly Garwood, Craig Crowder, Vanessa Leamon and husband Chad, Rusty Dewitt and Matthew Dewitt; and great-grandchildren, Lauren, Emily, Lando and Sawyer Cleefman and Shaelyne and Gabriel Leamon.

Robert A. Fraser

Nov. 21, 1925 — April 16, 2007

Robert Andrew Fraser, 81, of Fairfield Glade, passed away April 16, 2007. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 21, at Christ Lutheran Church in Fairfield Glade, with Pastor Jerry Weeks officiating. Burial will be in the church columbarium.

Mr. Fraser was born Nov. 21, 1925, in Ozone Park, Long Island, New York, the son of James and Katherine Hand Fraser.

He was a retired supervisor for New York Telephone. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Fairfield Glade and formerly served as an elder at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and belonged to many clubs and civic organizations including VORP where he served as a trained mediator, Elks Lodge 2751 Crossville where he served as Exalted Ruler, 127 South Senior Center and the Telephone Pioneers.

He had many hobbies and interests including golf, bowling, playing cards, hunting, competitive rifle shooting and archery. He also liked to travel, had a keen interest in Civil War history and was an avid New York Yankees fan.

Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Doris Fraser of Fairfield Glade; daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Keith Roark of Bristol, VA; daughter-in-law, Melissa Fraser of Yorktown Heights, NY; grandchildren, Dylan, Zachary and Jacob Fraser, Jenna Roark and fiancé James Forester and Alexander Roark; and cousin, Alice Hand of New Hyde Park, NY.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Lawrence Andrew Fraser; and brother, James Fraser Jr.

The family has respectfully asked that donations be made to Christ Lutheran Church, 481 Snead Dr., Crossville, TN 38571.

Dorothy L. Kollender

Feb. 11, 1916 — April 7, 2007

Dorothy Lutz Kollender passed away April 7, 2007, at home at Uplands Village in Pleasant Hill. A concert at Uplands Village is planned in her memory, followed by a family memorial in White Creek, NY, where she will rest with her husband and other members of her family.

Mrs. Kollender was born Feb. 11, 1916, in Pittsburgh, PA, the daughter of Harmon A. Lutz and Nora Agnes Lutz.

She was a painter, teacher, and beloved wife and mother.

She married Mortimer Kollender Jr., an attorney, on Jan. 1, 1938. They were married for 46 eventful years and had five children. She held a B.A. in education, literature and art from American University in Washington, DC, and was chairwoman of the League of Women Voters Chapter in Fairfax, VA, where the family made their home for many years following World War II.

Her special love was watercolor painting. She studied drawing and oil painting with Richard Lakey at the Corcoran School of Art, and with Ben Summerford at American University, both in Washington, DC. She painted with an artist in Geneva, Switzerland, and studied and painted with Betty Bee at her studio in Myrtle Beach, SC. The beauty of the natural world was her constant inspiration, and she often liked to say, "My eye is in love," as she contemplated her many subjects.

Mrs. Kollender exhibited her work at the Watkins Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, the Southern Vermont Art Center Gallery in Manchester, VT, the Chaffee Gallery in Rutland, VT, the Waccamaw Art and Craft Guild shows, and was the featured artist at Crossville City Hall in a showing sponsored by the Crossville Art Guild. Many of her over 600 paintings are in private collections.

Perhaps the truest reflection of Mrs. Kollender comes from her artist's statement. "In viewing a drawing, painting or sculpture, one may ask, 'Why this as a subject?' An artist may have been intrigued, emotion and imagination stirred, by the beauty or perfection of a flower, character of a face, figure, or the transpiring of an event. The artist may be moved and inspired to record a response bringing heart and mind to the endeavor. For my part, I look and search for the essence of the subject. In painting, I find this quest essential to a discovery that can be a joyful experience. And so the viewer is invited to see and participate in the artist's vision of a reality as seen and felt."

Survivors include her daughters, Sandra Liberty, Mary Jane Adams and Anne Kollender; grandchildren, Suzanne Sullivan, Shawn Liberty, Nicole Holloman, Vanessa and Robyn Brigham; and great-grandchildren, Patrick and Cole Sullivan.

Memorials may be made in the memory of Dorothy L. Kollender to support the work of Avalon Center, the Pleasant Hill Children's Enrichment Center and Hospice of Cumberland County.

Bernice J. Lawson

April 17, 2007

Bernice "Bunchie" Jones Lawson, 88, of Hendersonville, passed away April 17, 2007. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, April 20, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Hendersonville Funeral Home, and also on Saturday, April 21, at 11 a.m. from the Hopewell Church of God of Prophecy in Bessemer, AL, with Eugene Weakley, H. Wayne Hall and James Williams officiating. Visitation with the family will be on Friday, April 20, and Saturday, April 21, from 10 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be in the Hopewell Road Cemetery in Bessemer, AL.

Mrs. Lawson is survived by her sons, L.V. Jones (Billie Ruth) and Glenn Jones (Annette); daughter, Janice Miller (Roy); stepchildren, Chan Lawson (Betty), Dell Lawson (Martha), Don Lawson (Alisa), Jack Lawson (Joyce), Dorothy McDaniel and Pat Fuller (Gary); sisters, Lorene Reid, Jewel Cassell, Ruth Dicks, Sena Buxton, Mary Lois Golden and Fran Cade; brother, Gene Taylor; 13 grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and 28 step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, L.V. Jones, Sr.; son, Bobby J. Jones; husband, Raymond D. Lawson; sister, Linnie Hodo; and brothers, Samuel Taylor, Amos Taylor and Homer Taylor.

Her grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.

Janet A. McKeel

Feb. 7, 1927 — April 11, 2007

Janet Alice McKeel, 80, of Fairfield Glade, passed away April 11, 2007. Memorial services were held April 14 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, with Pastor David Lampman officiating. Interment was in the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Columbarium.

Mrs. McKeel was born Feb. 7, 1927, in Eagle River, WI, the daughter of Louis and Frieda Meihack Zimbelmann.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. Her special hobby was playing bridge.

Survivors include her husband, George McKeel of Fairfield Glade; son and daughter-in-law, Mark Frederick and Ellen McKeel of Madison, WI; daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly Janet McKeel and James Kordel of Beaverton, OH; sister, Ruth Ellis of Eagle River, WI; grandchildren, Casey Lynn McKeel and Scott Riley McKeel; and many special cousins, nieces and nephews.

Carolyn L. Rogers

March 28, 1963 — April 15, 2007

Carolyn Lorene Rogers, 44, of Crossville, passed away April 15, 2007, in Nevada. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, April 20, from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with Bro. Doyle Ashburn officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. prior to the service.

Mrs. Rogers was born March 28, 1963, in Lodi, OH, the daughter of Cecil Sr. and Betty McElhaney Houston.

She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her mother, Betty Houston of Crossville; spouse, Freddy Rogers of Crossville; daughters, Jennifer Rogers and Ashley Rogers of Crossville; grandmother, Georgia McElhaney of Crossville; brother, Cecil Houston Jr. of Crossville; and sister, Julie Houston of Knoxville.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her grandfather, Clarence McElhaney; and grandparents, Sam and Alice Selby Houston.
