Danny R. Hinds
July 31, 1951 — April 24, 2007
Danny R. Hinds, 55, of the Rinnie community, passed away April 24, 2007. Funeral services were conducted April 27 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home, with Wayne Matthews and Grover Atkinson officiating. Special music was provided by Becky Abner. Burial was in Rinnie Cemetery.
Mr. Hinds was born July 31, 1951, in Crossville, the son of Emery Clyde Hinds and Edith Byrd Hinds.
He was a member of Clarkrange United Baptist Church, was an auto mechanic and also did masonry work. He enjoyed yard work, fishing, hunting and spending time talking to his family and friends.
Survivors include his brothers, John Hinds and Dallas Hinds of the Rinnie community; sister, Vonnie Cross of Byrdstown; and many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Roy Hinds.
Crossville Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.
Charles E. McGonigle
Jan. 19, 1934 — April 17, 2007
Charles Elmer McGonigle, 73, of Crossville, passed away April 17, 2007. A memorial service was held April 22 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with Bro. John Hodge officiating.
Mr. McGonigle was born Jan. 19, 1934, in Orleans, NY.
He served in the United States Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include his wife, Sammye Dawn (Kamin) McGonigle of Crossville; daughters, Trisha Lawson of Sparta, Bonnie Slone of Arizona and Bonnie Shatfield of New York; son, Charles E. McGonigle Jr. of Texas; and 12 grandchildren.
Bilbrey Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.
Dorothy F. Simmons
Dec. 14, 1925 — April 22, 2007
Dorothy Florence Simmons, 81, of Crossville, formerly of Hamilton, NJ, passed away April 22, 2007.
Mrs. Simmons was born Dec. 14, 1925, in Trenton, NJ, the daughter of John and Florence Hedden Latham.
She was a waitress during her working years and was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. She enjoyed walking and spending time with her special dog, James.
Survivors include her son, Steven Patrick Simmons of Seattle, MI; daughters, Linda (Stephen) Barnwell of Poquoson, VA and Susan (Ernest) Tabor of Crossville; daughter-in-law, Lorraine Simmons Jones of Crossville; grandchildren, Allen Tabor, Janet McGee, Julie Beechum, John Edgar Simmons Jr., Tracy Adams, Stephanie Apple, Andrew Simmons, Shelia Collette, Monica Simmons and Jessica Simmons; 18 great-grandchildren; and sister, Betty Getty of Hamilton, NJ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Simmons; son, John Simmons; and brother, Bill Latham.
Crossville Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.
Alexander van Aalten
Sept. 2, 1985 — April 20, 2007
Sgt. Alexander van Aalten, 21, of the Cumberland Cove community near Monterey, died during combat operations in Afghanistan on Friday, April 20, 2007. Funeral services were conducted April 29 at Trinity Assembly in Algood, with the Rev. Mike Campbell officiating. Private interment services will be held at a later date.
Sgt. van Aalten was born Sept. 2, 1985, in Orlando, FL, the son of Edward "Ed" and Susan Stokes van Aalten of Monterey.
He was a 2004 graduate of Cookeville High School and was the brigade commander for the ROTC. He earned his Black Belt in Karate and was a Karate instructor with Jack Scott United Karate Studio.
In June 2004, he joined the U.S. Army, entered basic training at Fort Benning, GA, and served as a gunner on a Humvee in Iraq in 2005. At the time of his death, he was a sergeant with the 82nd Airborne 1-508 PIR (Parachute Infantry Regiment) Delta Company at Fort Bragg, NC.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Shana Sorrell van Aalten (whom he married May 28, 2005); brother, Dax van Aalten of New York, NY; sister, Cpl. Nicole van Aalten of El Paso, TX (Fort Bliss); maternal grandfather, Herman Stokes of Monterey; paternal grandmother, Willa van Aalten of Brandon, FL; father-in-law, David (Kellie) Sorrell; and mother-in-law, Connie (Tim) Stinson, all of Sparta.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Ella May Fowler Stokes; and paternal grandfather, Edward van Aalten Sr.
Active pallbearers were the 82nd Airborne Honor Guard.
A memorial fund in the name of Sgt. Alexander van Aalten has been established at U.S. Bank.
Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Our beautiful angel, Lou Ella (Turner) Kemmer, 70, went home to be with the Lord May 18, 2012, after an incredible and courageously fought battle over the past several months. The family celebrated her life May 21 in her home church, the Church of God on Sparta Hwy., where she raised her family. Bro. Gene Burgess officiated the service. She was laid to rest at Grassy Cove United Methodist Cemetery.
