After borrowing the instrument, he tried playing it and decided to go ahead and enter, walking happily away with third place.

He competed several times in the Smithville Jamboree and played on stage many years at the Cumberland County Fair. A vast array of trophies, ribbons and plaques won during his many competitions lines his walls with some being displayed in the Museum of Appalachia.

He also enjoyed working, especially taking care of his garden and yard. He was loved by everyone who knew him and the talents he shared were greatly appreciated by bluegrass music lovers everywhere.
