Lucille H. Clark

Dec. 25, 1924 — June 16, 2007

Lucille Harley Clark, 82, of Crossville, passed away June 16, 2007. Funeral services were conducted June 19 from Victory Baptist Church, with Wayne Matthews officiating. Special music was provided by Shannon Clark. Burial was in Hyder Cemetery.

Mrs. Clark was born Dec. 25, 1924, in Highcoal, WV, the daughter of Edward Thomas and Nettie Stewart Swafford.

She was a homemaker and a former employee of the Fairfield Glade community for over 10 years. Her hobbies included antiques, decorating, going to the flea market, watching wrestling and cooking for her family. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Brenda and John Bergwitz of Evansville, IN, Bucky and Carla Hatfield of Goodrich, TX, Linda Strevel of Crossville, Marilyn Wears of Delaware, OH, Robert and Nola Clark of Crossville, Willie and Elaine Clark of Dayton, TN, Henry and Joyce Clark of Mt. Morris, PA, Allen Hatfield of Ravenswood, WV, Forrest and Terri Hatfield of Spring, TX, David Hatfield of Ripley, WV, Ricky Hatfield of Ripley, WV and Kevin and Shelly Hatfield of Parkersburg, WV; daughter-in-law, Linda Hatfield of Cookeville; 14 grandsons; 13 granddaughters; 56 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and special friends, Fred Rackley, Helen Tuttle, Cassandra Tuttle and numerous other friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Clark; son, the Rev. Larry Hatfield; son-in-law, Edward Strevel; grandson, Charles Bergwitz; and her sisters.

Pallbearers were Jonathan Byler, Greg Bergwitz, Robert Clark Jr., Cory Clark, Jay Bodiford and Joe Raleigh.

Crossville Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.



Velma R. James

July 9, 1920 — May 29, 2007

Velma Ruth (Thurman) James, 86, of Crossville, passed away May 29, 2007.

Mrs. James was born July 9, 1920, in Bledsoe County, the daughter of Samuel Floyd and Dossie Mae (Sherrill) Thurman.

She was a homemaker and a member of Safe Harbour Community Church.

Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Rose and Bill Simonsen of Crossville, Betty Griffith of Crossville, Marie Renaker of Crossville and Carolyn James of Crab Orchard; sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Anna James, Charlie James and Darrell and Jamie James, all of Crossville; daughter-in-law, Janetta James; brother, Gordon Thurman of Spring City; 19 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas B. James; son, Ivan Newell James; sister, Mildred Hinch; and brothers, Willard Thurman and Otis Thurman.

Bilbrey Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.



Clyde M. Lowe

Sept. 9, 1939 — June 18, 2007

Clyde M. Lowe, 67, of Clarkrange, passed away June 18, 2007, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted June 20 from the Clarkrange chapel of Jennings Funeral Home, with burial in the Clarkrange Baptist United Church Cemetery in Clarkrange.

Mr. Lowe was born Sept. 9, 1939, the son of Otto Lowe and Nettie (Sloan) Lowe.

He is survived by his wife, Francis (Gunter) Lowe of Clarkrange; son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Genice Lowe of Clarkrange; daughter and son-in-law, Kristy and Kenneth Wright of Rinnie; grandchildren, Mark Dixon II, Mandy Dixon, Holly Turner, Cody Wright, Torie Lowe, Lacey Lowe and Jesse Lowe of Clarkrange; stepmother, Willie Mae Lowe of Rinnie; brothers, Claude Lowe of Pall Mall, Joe Lowe, Earl Lowe, Melvin Lowe, Billy Joe Lowe, all of Crossville, and Dale Lowe of Pikeville; and sisters, Kathy Lowe, Ella Mae Bilbrey, Brenda Bailey and Rachel Pryor, all of Crossville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn Lowe.



Hunter R. Sherrill

Graveside services were held June 19 at Crossville City Cemetery for Hunter Ray Sherrill, the infant son of Steven and Elizabeth Sherrill of Crossville. Pastor Mike Kerley officiated.

He is also survived by his brother, Dillon Sherrill; grandparents, Suzanne and John Patterson and Estel and Sandra Sherrill; great-grandmother, Bonnie Whitehall; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Crossville Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.



Charles S. Smouthers

April 17, 1941 — June 19, 2007

Charles Stanley Smouthers, 66, of Crossville, passed away June 19, 2007. Funeral services were conducted June 21 at Cumberland Worship Center, with the Rev. Linus Vaughn and the Rev. Mark DuFrene officiating.

Mr. Smouthers was born April 17, 1941, in Detroit, MI, the son of Raymond and Viola (Sule) Smouthers.

He was a member of Cumberland Worship Center, served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his wife, Margo Smouthers of Crossville; sons, Chuck Smouthers of Rapid River, MI, Michael Smouthers of Brownstown, MI and David Smouthers of Crossville; grandson, Michael T. Smouthers of Brownstown, MI; sisters, Laura Gorman and Susie Kurilla of Michigan and Brenda McKinney of Tennessee; brothers, Raymond Smouthers, Bill Smouthers, Steve Smouthers and Larry Smouthers, all of Michigan, Patrick Smouthers of Tennessee, Roger Smouthers of Michigan, Lenny Smouthers and Wally Smouthers of Tennessee; and stepmother Ilene Slawinsky.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Joanne Smouthers and Patsy Smouthers.

Raymond M. Wardrop

Aug. 27, 1950 — June 20, 2007

Raymond Merrill Wardrop, 56, of Crossville, passed away June 20, 2007. Funeral services were conducted June 22 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with Bro. Mike Garrett officiating. Interment was in Haley's Grove Cemetery.

Mr. Wardrop was born Aug. 27, 1950, in Amesbury, MA, the son of Robert Wardrop and Pauline Elizabeth (Turcotte) Ewell.

He was a lamp and cabinet maker and a member of Meridian Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda (Kirkland) Wardrop of Crossville; daughters, Vickie Wardrop and Amy Wardrop of Massachusetts; stepdaughter and husband, Michelle and Tommy Pettus of Crossville; son, Joey Wardrop of Massachusetts; stepsons, Joshua Hudgins and wife Jessica of Wartburg and Troy Hardy of Virginia; mother, Pauline Elizabeth (Turcotte) Ewell of Massachusetts; father, Robert Wardrop of California; sister, Marilyn Smith of Maine; brother, Bob Wardrop of Maine; and grandchildren, Luke Pettus and Cristy Hardy.

Pallbearers were Bill Lozon, Rex Dalton, Lynn Kirkland, Tommy Pettus Sr., Bryan Hudgins and Jason Kirkland.

Wilbert Wyatt

June 20, 2007

Wilbert “Hoy” Wyatt, 76, of Gatlinburg, passed away on June 20, 2007, at his home with family and loved ones at his side. Funeral services were conducted June 23 in the East Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff Rice officiating. Interment followed in Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens.

Mr. Wyatt was a very kind and loving person and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his loving wife, Carlee Barnwell Wyatt; son, Eddie Hoy Wyatt; daughter, Dayna Lee Day; grandchildren, Laura Holbert and husband John, James Wade, Darrel Wyatt and Carlee Wyatt; great-grandchildren, Natalie and Cooper Holbert, Trey and Kylea Wade and Zoe McGuire; brothers, Dolan Wyatt and wife Sheila, Rama Wyatt and wife Marsha; and sister, Gladys Whittenburg.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Wilbert T. and Mary Richardson Wyatt.

Atchley Funeral Home of Sevierville was in charge of the arrangements.

She was laid to rest at Grassy Cove United Methodist Cemetery.

Interment will be in Macon County Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight, Wednesday, from 4 to 8 p.m., and tomorrow from 9 a.m. until the service.
