Maurice Crandall

Aug. 8, 2007

Maurice Crandall, 79, of Deer Lodge, passed away Aug. 8, 2007. A memorial service was held Aug. 11 at the Meister Hills Seventh-day Adventist Church, with Pastor Harold Kuebler and Pastor Joe Blevins officiating.

Mr. Crandall was born in Indianapolis, IN, the seventh in a family of 10 children, to the late Henry and Charlotte Pearl Jones Crandall.

He was a retired educator with the Seventh-day Adventist School System after 35 years of service, having taught music, English, Bible and library science. He was a member of the Morgan County Choral Society and the Oak Ridge Community Band.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Betty Schmidt Crandall; daughters and sons-in-law, Laurie and Ross Raneri of Omaha, NE, Melody and David Schreck of Garretson, SD and Starla Crandall of Philadelphia, PA; special grandchildren, Jason and Allison Anders of Collegedale, TN; special daughter, Ashley Lunkenheimer of Philadelphia, PA; sister, Doris Pettigrew of Carmel, IN; brothers, Dale Crandall of Columbus, IN, Vincent Crandall of Orlando, FL and Glen Crandall of Asheville, NC; and a host of nieces and nephews and very close friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Meister Hills Elementary School, 1145 Meister Hills Rd., Deer Lodge, TN or the Alzheimer's Association, PO Box 2827, Cookeville, TN 38502.

Ava L. Hixson

May 21, 1909 — Aug. 6, 2007

Ava Lee Hixson, 98, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 6, 2007. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 9 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Bell officiating. Burial was in Green Acres Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Hixson was born May 21, 1909, in Cumberland County, the daughter of Robert E. and Eva Lista Parham Kemmer.

For over 60 years, she and her husband, M.A., owned and operated M.A. Hixson Grocery in the Tabor community. She was also a member of Tollett's Chapel Methodist Church. She was born and raised in the Grassy Cove area and owned a grocery store in Jewett before moving to Tabor in 1941. While living in the cove, she taught school at Happy Top, Big Sandy and Alloway.

During her years, she assisted many families in the community with the births of their children. She was also a lady of many talents, being a wonderful cook and seamstress. She also liked crocheting and canning. Working in her flower garden was another favorite pastime.

Her children and family were important to her and she loved them each so very much. The example she set in her community and church will always be as a loving and devoted Christian lady. All who were blessed to have known her will miss her greatly.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Junior and Sharon Hixson; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Deloy Brown, Janelle and Don Goss and Virginia Hixson, all of Crossville; brother, Robert Kemmer II of Crossville; sister, Cleo Coston of Knoxville; grandchildren, Colleen Goss, Rodney Brown, Kristie Pugh, Chris Hixson and Kyle Hixson; and great-grandchildren, Tyler Brown, Lauren Brown, Lindsey Pugh, Jake Wallace, Blake Pugh and Jacob Hixson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, M.A. Hixson; infant daughter, Meredith Hixson; and grandson, Kevin Hixson.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, Rodney Brown, Chris Hixson, Tyler Brown, Jake Wallace, Jacob Hixson, Blake Pugh and Kyle Hixson.

Grace P. Kelsch

Jan. 27, 1915 — Aug. 8, 2007

Grace Priscilla Kelsch, 92, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 8, 2007.

Mrs. Kelsch was born Jan. 27, 1915, in Knoxville, the daughter of Ellis and Maude Yoder Beam.

She attended First Congregational Church. Before retiring, she had been an interior decorator.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, William and Selah Kelsch Sr. of Crossville; grandchildren, William Kelsch Jr. and wife Cathy of Alcoa, Kimberly Irons of Knoxville and Lisa Norris and husband Arles of Crossville; and five great-grandchildren.

Everyone at Azalea Gardens was like an extended family to her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Louis George Kelsch; and sisters, Dorothy Carr and Ruth Doughty of Knoxville.

Archie L. Kendrick

Nov. 19, 1930 — Aug. 8, 2007

Archie Leon Kendrick, 76, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 8, 2007. Graveside services were conducted Aug. 11 at Crossville City Cemetery, with Mark Dufrene officiating. The Veterans Honor Guard provided full military honors and also served as pallbearers.

Mr. Kendrick was born Nov. 19, 1930, in Deer Lodge, the son of Henry and Dollie Howard Kendrick.

Before retiring, he was a vocational school teacher and had served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He enjoyed playing the steel guitar. He also made his own shotguns, liked going to shooting matches and was a big Tennessee football fan.

Survivors include his sons, Wayne (Martha) Kendrick of Huntsville, AL and Wade (Lori) Kendrick of Madison, AL; daughters, Leona Wyatt of Crossville, Vikki (Randy) Simpson of Florence, AL and Pamela Kendrick (Kevin Howard) of Crossville; grandchildren, Martha Vest, Miranda (Ryan) Hurd, Erin (Jessie) Rogers, Kari (Phil) Meek, Jeff (Melissa) Jones, Kevin Kendrick, Jonathan Kendrick and Kaylee Beth Kendrick; great-grandchildren, Michael and Kristen VanWinkle, Sophie and Jimmy Meek, Leah Rogers, Emily Jones and Michael Hurd.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Razzie Kendrick.

Patricia L. Randolph

Sept. 26, 1952 — Aug. 7, 2007

Patricia Louise (White) Randolph, 54, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 7, 2007. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 10 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with Bro. Frank Walker officiating. Interment was in Mayland Cemetery.

Mrs. Randolph was born Sept. 26, 1952, in Barberton, OH, the daughter of Delmer John and Lorene Mary (Pugh) White.

She worked at Perdue Farms and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband, James H. "Buddy" Randolph of Crossville; son, Jeffery Randolph of Cookeville; daughter, Dorothy Trosclair of Crossville; sisters, Barbara Brooks of Crossville, Ernestine Kingan of Monterey and Norma Mills of Barberton, OH; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, John White and Freddy White.

Pallbearers were Ralph Brooks, Jeffery Randolph, Mike Parker, Tony Morelock, Lloyd Sherrill, Jamie Brooks, Johnny Mabe and David Lee.

Bill W. Wallace

Jan. 4, 1949 — Aug. 3, 2007

Bill Warren Wallace, 58, passed away Aug. 3, 2007, at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville after a long illness.

Mr. Wallace was born in Knoxville, Iowa on Jan. 4, 1949. He was one of 12 children born to Alice Genevieve Pelong and Lewis George Wallace. Bill grew up in Knoxville and Des Moines. As a young man, Bill worked as a mechanic. In later years Bill drove truck. He truly loved his work. Most of his driving was out of Des Moines; however, he also worked in Tennessee for several years.

Bill loved animals. His companions were his two dogs, Peaches and Molly. Bill collected classic cars — full sized and models. He also spent many hours watching NASCAR races. The greatest love of Bill's life however, were his two granddaughters. He always had time for them.

Bill Warren Wallace was united in marriage to Jolee Kay Ryan on May 27, 1995.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one sister, Nancy Wallace; and one brother, Marvin Wallace.

Those left to mourn his passing are his wife, Jolee Wallace of Crossville, TN; stepson and his wife, Jason and Carmen Stockton of Chicago, IL; granddaughters, Aislinn and Mackenzie Stockton of Chicago, IL; sisters, Jeanne Ver Huel and husband James of Mesa, AZ, Sue Hagan and husband Dennis of Altoona, Carolyn Osborn and husband Gary of Ankeny and Dee De Bonis and John Leopold of Altoona; brothers, Don Wallace and wife Ruby, Ron Wallace, Bob Wallace, Jerry Wallace and Danny Wallace and wife Marvon, all of Des Moines; as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Aug. 9, at Williams Funeral Home with Pastor Gerald Morris officiating. Interment was in Graceland Cemetery. Musical selections were "Amazing Grace" and "You Raise Me." Vocalist was Mr. Wallace's granddaughter, Aislinn Stockton.

Casket bearers were Dewayne Hagan, Kent Krueger, Neal Krueger, Steve Peterson, Jason Stockton, Donnie Wallace and Jon Wallace.

Paul E. Wilbanks

May 10, 1936 — Aug. 7, 2007

Paul Edward Wilbanks, 71, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 7, 2007. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 10 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with Bro. Chester Rhodes and Bro. Jeffrey Rice officiating. Interment was in Green Acres Memory Gardens.

Mr. Wilbanks was born May 10, 1936, in Crossville, the son of Beecher and Mabel Victoria (Farr) Wilbanks.

He was retired from Aetna Insurance Company.

Survivors include his wife, Stacy Mae (Barnwell) Wilbanks of Crossville; daughter, Jill Little of Atlanta; son, Joel Todd Wilbanks of Crossville; grandchildren, Emily and Luke Little; and sister, Christine Dayton of Oregon.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Joann Kemmer; and brother, Benny Wilbanks.

Pallbearers were Denton Adams, Donnie Gentry, Wade Beaty, Craig Little, Joel Jestice and Greg Smith.

Honorary pallbearers were Jimmy Owens, Raymond McDaniel, Roger Blankenship and Jesse Smallwood.

Garland P. Wright

Aug. 10, 2007

Garland Pershing "Geep" Wright, 89, of Rockwood, passed away Aug. 10, 2007. A celebration service was held Aug. 12 from the chapel of Evans Mortuary of Rockwood, with the Rev. Keith Knight and Bro. O.T. Smith officiating. Graveside service and entombment were held Aug. 13 in the Roane Memorial Gardens, with honors by the Roane County Military Memorial Honor Guard.

Mr. Wright was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of Asbury Chapel United Methodist Church in Rockwood, a member of Rockwood Lodge #403 F&AM;, a member of the Tennessee Bee Keepers Association, a member of the Untied Carpenters and Joiners of America, an avid duck and bird hunter and fisherman. He was a retired carpenter with TVA.

Survivors include his daughter, Mary Louise Parks and husband Ed of Charlotte, NC; stepson, Bobby L. Dodd and wife Judy of Oak Ridge; stepdaughter, Diana Ratcliffe of Rockwood; several grandchildren; and sister, Anna L. McCuiston of Rockwood.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth "Bugg" Wright; brothers, Frank and James Marlon Wright; and sister, Martha W. Mathis.

Memorial contributions may be made to Asbury Chapel United Methodist Church, PO Box 822, Rockwood, TN 37854.

    Funeral services for Velma Short Phillips, 89, of Crossville, will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Cumberland Fellowship Church in Crossville. Pastor Hank Jones will officiate with interment to follow in the Welch Memorial Cemetery in Monterey.
