Betty J. Boeck

Sept. 7, 1927 — Aug. 11, 2007

Betty Jeanne Boeck, 79, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 11, 2007. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 13 at Pine Eden Baptist Church, with Bro. Tony Wilson and Steve Haymond officiating. Burial was in Crossville City Cemetery.

Mrs. Boeck was born Sept. 7, 1927, in Battle Creek, MI, the daughter of Louie and Pyllis Coss Wright.

She was a retired secretary and for many years, a pastor's wife. She was also a member of Pine Eden Baptist Church. She loved music and was involved in the church music program and the choir.

Survivors include her son, Dean W. Boeck of Youngstown, OH; adopted son, Sean Finch of Topeka, KS; daughters, Melanie Haymond of Kalispell, MT, Robin Schmitt of Chesterfield, VA and Michele Fileccia of Crossville; adopted daughter, Terri Watson of Crossville; and nine grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Norman William Boeck; and brother, Larry Wright.

Nellie M. Burgess

Oct. 16, 1918 — Aug. 16, 2007

Nellie Marguerite (Turner) Burgess, 88, of Chattanooga, passed away Aug. 16, 2007. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 19 from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with burial following in Turner Cemetery.

Mrs. Burgess was born Oct. 16, 1918, in Cumberland County, the daughter of William Ervie and Allie Mae (Dayton) Turner.

She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her sons, William Jerry Burgess of Chattanooga, Sanford Elmo Burgess of Sterling Heights, MI and Verble Bruce Burgess of Chattanooga; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Sanford "Red" Burgess; sisters, Bertha Allen, Evelyn Bowen, Lenice Dykes, Leona Holmes, Elsie Melton, Hazel Swallows and Florence Turner; and brothers, Paul Turner and Carson Turner.

Bilbrey Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.



Edward G. Ellenburg

Sept. 15, 1920 — Aug. 17, 2007

Edward George Ellenburg, 86, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Aug. 17, 2007. Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. Pastor David Lampman will officiate.

Mr. Ellenburg was born Sept. 15, 1920, in Union City, NJ, the son of George Henry and Ruth Agnes Jerman Ellenburg.

He was retired from the United States Forest Service as a land use planner and was also a fighter pilot during World War II in the United States Air Force where he retired with the rank of major. He was a charter member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, served as chief of the Fairfield Glade Fire Department for five years and was also a county commissioner for 14 years.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Swanson Ellenburg of Fairfield Glade; son, Mark Ellenburg of Knoxville; daughter, Terri Frost of Adamsville, AL; brother, George Ellenburg of Crossville; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or Hospice of Cumberland County.

Margaret B. Pugh

May 10, 1917 — Aug. 16, 2007

Margaret Bond Pugh, 90, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 16, 2007. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 17 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with Bro. Junior Pugh and Bro. Dillard Cantrell officiating. Special music was by Marshall Pugh and the Tennessee Gospel Aires. Burial was in Pugh Cemetery.

Mrs. Pugh was born May 10, 1917, in Jackson County, Kentucky, the daughter of Charles and Nellie Wilson Bond.

She was the only daughter along with eight brothers. The family later moved to Knoxville where she graduated from Karns High School in 1936. They soon moved to Crossville in 1939 where she met Luther Pugh and they married Feb. 15, 1941. They set up housekeeping in an old mining shack at the Mayland Coal Mines just off the Jim Garrett Road, north of Mayland. A little later they moved to Plateau Road and started their own family. James Everett was born in 1944, but unfortunately he lived only a few months. Raymond was born in 1945, Margelene in 1946 and Clifford in 1947. They lived the remaining years at the same place on Plateau Road until Luther's death in 2002. They were married for 61 years.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond and Gerry Pugh and Clifford and Sue Pugh, all of Crossville; daughter and son-in-law, Margelene and Charles Lester of Crossville; brothers, Harold Bond of Broken Bow, OK, Edwin Bond of Canton, OH and John Bond of Crossville; grandchildren, Gary Pugh of Crossville, Crystal Lake of Cookeville, Cindy Hill of Jacksboro, Ricky Lester of Crossville and Marshall Pugh of Brentwood; great-grandchildren, Lindsey, Blake, Logan, Brittney, Tristan and Cole; great-great-granddaughter, Gracie Brock; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Pugh; son, James Everett Pugh; and brothers, Bill Bond, Wilson Bond, Ernest Bond, Bob Bond and David Bond.

Pallbearers were Ricky Lester, Marshall Pugh, Blake Pugh, Andrew Pugh, Randy Bond and Kenney Carey.

Roger T. Wernecke

July 23, 1928 — Aug. 16, 2007

Roger Terence Wernecke, 79, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 16, 2007. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 20 at Cornerstone Baptist Church, with Bro. Mike Kerley officiating.

Mr. Wernecke was born July 23, 1928, in Dodge Center, MN, the son of Arnold and Elvira (Thompson) Wernecke.

He was retired from Pirelli Armstrong Tire Company and was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. He served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Jean (Kayga) Wernecke of Crossville; daughters and son-in-law, Rita and David A. Sherman of Lansing, MI and Rhonda Wernecke of Des Moines, IA; brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Joanne Wernecke of Andover, MN; grandson, David Alan Sherman; granddaughter, Shawn Sherman; and great-granddaughter, Courtney Sherman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Royce Wernecke.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to Gideons Memorial Bibles.

The family celebrated her life May 21 in her home church, the Church of God on Sparta Hwy., where she raised her family. Bro. Gene Burgess officiated the service. She was laid to rest at Grassy Cove United Methodist Cemetery.

Interment will be in Macon County Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight, Wednesday, from 4 to 8 p.m., and tomorrow from 9 a.m. until the service.
