Mary E. Burton

July 21, 1936 — Sept. 2, 2007

Mary Elizabeth (Thomas) Burton, 71 of Crossville, passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home, with Bro. James Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Crossville City Cemetery.

Mrs. Burton was born July 21, 1936, in Greeneville, TN, daughter of Charles McClung Thomas and Frances (Byrd) Thomas.

She was an event coordinator at the White House during President Jimmy Carter's Administration. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Crossville.

Survivors include her son, Charles (Stephanie) Burton of Memphis; daughters, Susan (Charles) Harding of Frederick, MD and Jeannie (Kyle) Brant of Indianapolis, IN; sister, Charlotte Huddleston of Knoxville; and five grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Eugene Burton; grandson, Nicklaus Thomas Burton; and granddaughter, Blaire Elizabeth Burton.

Vera G. Corley

March 1, 1916 — Sept. 1, 2007

Vera Gladys (Shockley) Corley, 91, of Dade City, FL, passed away Sept. 1, 2007. Funeral services were held in Dade City, FL.

Mrs. Corley was born March 1, 1916, in Jonesboro, AR, the daughter of Owen and Elizabeth (Seymore) Shockley.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her daughters, Rita Fowler and Corine V. Fallin of Dade City, FL, Anne Marie Spivey of Centerville, TN and Maxine Breeden of Crossville; son, J.D. Swartzlander of Plants City, FL; and sister, Alfreda Duncan of Duntersville, FL.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Ira Ion Swartzlander; and second husband, James Francis Corley.

Teresa A. Green

June 11, 1954 — Sept. 2, 2007

Teresa Ann (Cooper) Green, 53, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 2, 2007. A memorial service will be held at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses Friday, Sept. 7, at 3 p.m. with Bro. Max White officiating.

Mrs. Green was born June 11, 1954, in Crossville, the daughter of MC Cooper and Thelma King.

She was associated with Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Survivors include her husband, Henry Edward Green of Crossville; sisters, Marie (Jim) Elkins of Clarkrange, Janie (Junior) Green of Crossville and Bou (Steve) Moore of Murfreesboro; brother, Roy (Donna) Cooper of Clarkrange; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Gene Cooper.

Alma K. Johnson

April 1, 1941 — Aug. 25, 2007

Alma Kay Johnson, 66, of Crossville, passed away Aug. 25, 2007. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 31 at Crossville City Cemetery, with Mike Ritzman officiating.

Mrs. Johnson was born April 1, 1941, in Jasper, AL, the daughter of Duey and Katie Cornelius Willis.

She was a house cleaner and a member of Believer's Fellowship Church. She enjoyed flowers, gardening and planting.

She is survived by her brother, Darrell Willis of Crossville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Art Johnson; brothers, William, Calvin and Floyd Willis; and sister, Gladys Prine.

Crossville Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.



Virgie M. H. Roland

Nov. 26, 1909 — Aug. 31, 2007

Virgie May Hunt Roland passed away Aug. 31, 2007, in Rockwood Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Rockwood. A private graveside service was held Sept. 4 at Green Acres Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Keith Knight officiating.

Mrs. Roland was born Nov. 26, 1909, in Forest, MS, the daughter of Annie Laura Pace Hunt and Charles Andrew Hunt.

She was of the Baptist faith. She graduated from Forest High School in Scott County, Mississippi, in 1927. She was valedictorian of her senior class. She attended nursing school at Baptist Hospital in Memphis. She moved to Tennessee with her husband who was employed with J.A. Jones Construction Company, involved in building of the Oak Ridge Manhattan Project weapons plant during World War II. They settled in Cumberland Homesteads in Crossville where she lived for 65 years. She operated a home farm business, which included a dairy, truck garden, poultry, strawberries and tobacco farming. She was an avid gardener, enjoyed animal husbandry, flower growing and reading. She was the mother of six children.

Survivors include her sons, Lionel Roland of Denver, CO, Byron Roland of Crossville and Charles (Chuck) Roland of Morgan City, LA; daughters, Juadine Bland of Acworth, GA and Mary Ann Owings of Rockwood and Crossville; grandchildren, Carl Jaynes, Genie Matherne, Collette Jaynes, Robin Jaynes, Chris Jaynes, Summer Bland, Megan Bland, Melissa Bland, Debra Smith, V.L. II (Bud) Roland, Charles (Chuck) Roland, Rick Roland, Barbara Sue Roland, Sherry Lawson, Kathy Patton, Bobby Roland, Alan Owings and Laura Demko; 28 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and 17 cherished nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Oda Carl Roland (O.C.); daughter, Evelyn Eugenia (Genie) Roland; brothers, Erwin Maxwell Hunt and Charles Armon Hunt; sisters, Evelyn Loraine Alford and Lexie Ann Leighton; and grandchild, Cynthia Roland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the charity of your choice.

    Funeral services for Velma Short Phillips, 89, of Crossville, will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Cumberland Fellowship Church in Crossville. Pastor Hank Jones will officiate with interment to follow in the Welch Memorial Cemetery in Monterey. The family will receive friends at the church, at 1640 West Ave., Saturday from 11 a.m. until time of services at 1 p.m.

    Daniel Lewis Tuttle Sr., 72, of Crossville, passed away Feb. 2, 2012, at his home in Crossville. Funeral services were held Feb. 6, 2012, from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home with Bro. Wayne Matthews and Bro. Charles Presley officiating. Interment will be in Hyder Cemetery.
