CROSSVILLE —
The construction department at SMHS recently held a ground-breaking ceremony for their house to be built by students on campus. Construction courses are offered at SMHS through the Career and Technical Education (CTE) federal program. CTE courses, at the high school level, are designed to allow students to explore career opportunities. The courses also give options for further education by teaching current industrial standards while developing real world skills. In the SMHS construction department, there are two courses currently offered. Construction Core teaches basic fundamentals of the construction industry, while Carpentry One provides students with a well-rounded understanding of residential and commercial construction, by providing job entry level skills.
The Carpentry One class will be building the 1,404 square foot house on campus. It will include three bedrooms and two full baths. Upon completion, the house will be sold at auction. Mr. Koehl, SMHS construction department instructor, stated, “My students and I are excited over this opportunity. A hands-on learning experience of this nature will benefit them the rest of their lives.” He also wanted to express his gratitude to the CCBOE for making this dream possible for the students.
