CROSSVILLE —
The fourth annual High School Football Challenge food drive concluded Oct. 5, with the halftime announcement that Stone Memorial beat out Cumberland County High School by an amazing 11,000 pound margin. The victory by Stone tied the Football Challenge competition between the two high schools at two wins each.
Stone Memorial collected more than 33,000 pounds of food and was presented with a check for $500 from the Kroger Corporation. CCHS amassed nearly 22,000 pounds of food and received a check for $250 from the DIY Network. Notably both schools, each of the four years of the competition, have consistently increased food poundage totals from the previous year.
Among the elementary schools, North Cumberland Elementary School again led the way with 7,573 pounds of food, with each student providing roughly 11 pounds of food to the school total. Hats are off as well to Stone and Martin Elementary schools as they, for the fourth year in a row, averaged better than two pounds of food per student. As in the past, each elementary school reaching its assigned goal will receive a separate monetary award to assist in funding local school events.
In total, an equivalent 72,809 pounds of food and money was collected to benefit Second Harvest of East Tennessee. This is the fourth year that county schools have eclipsed the total food poundage collected from the previous year. As in previous Football Challenge events, cash donated by students was converted into a four pound equivalent for every dollar collected.
“The county total food poundage, speaks for itself,” said Drew Landrus, coordinator for the Football Challenge. “Second Harvest is genuinely overwhelmed by Cumberland County’s continued improvement in food collections for the fourth straight year since this has happened in the face of continuing economic struggle in east Tennessee.”
The Football Challenge is an annual event of Second Harvest and sponsored by Kroger, DIY Network and WATE – Channel 6. Second Harvest of East Tennessee serves 18 counties.

Summer Food Service Program announces locations
The Cumberland County School Nutrition Program announces its sponsorship of the 2013 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which is administered in Tennessee by the Department of Human Services under an agreement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture USDA). Meals will be provided to all children without charge.

The Hull-York Lakeland Resource Conservation & Development Council (RC&D) recently held its 21st Annual Regional Envirothon at the Hyder-Burks Agricultural Pavilion in Cookeville. A total of 22 teams from the council’s 14 Upper Cumberland counties participated in this year’s contest. The Envirothon is an Environmental Education contest for high school students where the students work together as a team.

Students honored by Kids on the Rise
Kids on the Rise (KOTR) held their first student recognition luncheon recently to honor all of the students in the KOTR program. In addition, two scholarship awards were passed out to students who have completed high school and been a part of the KOTR program for at least four years. The luncheon was held at the Art Circle Public Library through a grant from Volunteer Energy Cooperative’s VECustomers Share program. KOTR gratefully acknowledges VEC’s warm support.
