Hats for school children a labor of love for Joyce Skeels
For over 15 years, the Fairfield Glade FCE Club had arranged for a holiday gift to be given to each kindergarten student at Pleasant Hill and Crab Orchard Elementary Schools. The best part of the gift was a beautiful, one-of-a-kind knitted hat, handmade by Joyce Skeels. This year, Skeels donated over 150 hats to this project. All gorgeous, all different!
The FFG FCE club has disbanded, but one former member, Arlene Albert, has taken over this project as her personal contribution to the holiday season. She explains, “Wanda Petrosky was my neighbor across Oxford Lake and she headed the project for Crab Orchard Elementary each year. When she passed away a few years ago, the project fell to me. As a memorial to her, I wanted to continue doing this little act of holiday giving. I am so grateful that Mrs. Skeels is willing to supply me with these beautiful hats, which are the main part of the gift. All I add is a few snacks — rice crispy treats, cookies and gummy bears, etc. — to the hats and wrap them up for the children to open at their holiday parties.”
Because of Skeels, Albert has been able to continue giving these gifts to the kindergarten students at Crab Orchard and Pleasant Hill (originally a project of Fran Cook before she moved to her son’s home this past year) and has even expanded the program to include the students at Pine View Elementary. “With the help of my husband, Mark Richie, I was able to deliver 73 hats/presents to Pleasant Hill, 42 to Crab Orchard and 42 to Pine View. It is really a gift to me that I can do this, and my special thanks to Mrs. Skeels for making it possible,” added Albert.
