Crab Orchard Elementary School has been awarded $4,000 to support its Fuel Up to Play 60 initiative, the Southeast Dairy Association announced. This is the second year in a row that Crab Orchard has received funding for its Fuel Up to Play 60 program. This year’s funding will be used to help sustain and expand healthy nutrition and physical activity improvements begun during the 2011-12 school year. This nationwide Fuel Up to Play 60 program offers schools the opportunity to apply for up to $4,000 yearly to help them increase awareness of and access to nutrient-rich foods and physical activity opportunities for students. Funding for this competitive program is provided in Tennessee by the Southeast Dairy Association, on behalf of Southeast dairy farm families.
Crab Orchard Elementary will use the funds to purchase a smoothie blender, healthy foods for taste testing to include fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy, and various physical activity equipment to be used for a fitness center in the gym, in-class activity breaks and before and after school activities. A Fuel Up to Play 60 student team, under the guidance of Program Advisor and PE Teacher Cindy Miniard, is involved in every aspect of this program, from planning to promotion and implementation. The team helps select foods for taste testing and promotes all program-related activities to their peers. All students will be able to participate in a smoothie recipe contest and monthly fitness challenges, and will be rewarded in healthy ways for their hard work.
“We are so excited about being a Fuel Up to Play 60 school and want to continue to build on our success with the program from last year. The funding will help give our students more opportunities to learn about proper nutrition and fitness, supplying them with the necessary tools to make educated choices,” says Miniard.
More than 70,000 schools across the United States are participating in Fuel Up to Play 60. Developed by National Dairy Council, local Dairy Councils and National Football League (NFL), in collaboration with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the program encourages youth to consume nutrient-rich foods and achieve at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Multiple health organizations and several major corporations also support Fuel Up to Play 60.
“Fuel Up to Play 60 has really taken off at Crab Orchard Elementary, and these funds will help the school to continue to do even more,” said Marie Keith, School Program Account Manager with the Southeast Dairy Association.

There are several application windows each year, including the next upcoming deadline of January 15, 2013.

Students honored by Kids on the Rise

In addition, two scholarship awards were passed out to students who have completed high school and been a part of the KOTR program for at least four years. The luncheon was held at the Art Circle Public Library through a grant from Volunteer Energy Cooperative’s VECustomers Share program. KOTR gratefully acknowledges VEC’s warm support.
