Local 4-H’ers compete at county contest

CROSSVILLE — Close to fifty Cumberland County fourth- through 12th-grade 4-H’ers competed in the countywide public speaking contest Saturday, Jan. 12, at Martin Elementary.  Competition began in November with local public speaking contests being held in the classrooms at each of the schools. More than 1120 4-H club members spoke on topics related to education and careers, with approximately 90% of the teachers giving a grade or extra credit for participation. Club winners were determined and invited to represent their classes at the county-level contest. 

County winners and runners-up include:

Fourth grade — Bryan Ramsey, first place, Brown Elementary; Hailey Reagan, runner-up, Homestead Elementary  

Fifth grade — Spencer Moore, first place, Pine View Elementary; Kara Davis, runner-up, Homestead Elementary

Sixth grade — Hogan Herring, first place, South Cumberland Elementary; Julia Smith, runner-up, North Cumberland Elementary

Seventh grade — Alex Matthews, first place, Crossville Hearts Homeschool

11th grade — Taylor Griffith, first place, Plateau Homeschool; Katrina Vickers, runner-up, CCHS

12th grade — Jordynne Walker, first place, SMHS

First-place county winners for grades 4-7 will advance to the sub-regional contest Feb. 11, while the county winners for grades 11 and 12 will advance to the Eastern Region Contest on Feb. 2. All the participants in this event are to be commended for their performance.

    Kids on the Rise (KOTR) held their first student recognition luncheon recently to honor all of the students in the KOTR program. In addition, two scholarship awards were passed out to students who have completed high school and been a part of the KOTR program for at least four years. The luncheon was held at the Art Circle Public Library through a grant from Volunteer Energy Cooperative’s VECustomers Share program. KOTR gratefully acknowledges VEC’s warm support.
