Doctor accused of peddling OxyContin forfeits drug license

KNOXVILLE — A Knoxville doctor accused of peddling OxyContin surrendered his license to dispense drugs and agreed to live with his mother pending trial.

Sanford K. Myers turned over his U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration certificate Thursday in a federal court appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce Guyton.

He agreed to live with his mother as a condition for release on bond pending a February trial on nine counts of conspiring to supply others with OxyContin, a powerful opiate-based painkiller, from his West Knoxville clinic in 2005.

Jailed since his arrest last week, Myers pleaded innocent to the charges.

Myers has been licensed to practice medicine in Tennessee since 1985, though he said he allowed the license to expire in September. He told the judge he is currently unemployed and owes $27,000 in back taxes.
